Subject: Slit and bulge in tire wall
I was setting up my bike today and noticed that there is a slit in the wall of the back tire with the inner tube bulging out. I took the tire off and put a couple of pieces of electrical tape on the inside. The bulge is significantly less but it's still there. I was planning a long ride tomorrow. Any idea how long this will hold? I have another tire on order but I don't want to stop biking while I wait but neither do I want to be stuck many km from home with a blown tire.

I did a race like that, scared as crap the whole ride, but it held.  I wouldn't do it unless I had to though.  If you had a person to call to get home then go for it

don't chance it !

BUT if you must... take the tire off and use a tire boot made from Tyvek envelope (Fedex, USPS for example use this material).
Fold a good size piece and place inside the tire to cover the hole.

then you can put the tire back on the rim and pump it up. hopefully it will be good enough.

I'd ask your friends for a tire first though.

If my ride had any descents there is no way I would risk a high speed blowout. I did have a small sidewall split mid-ride and limped home with a slightly bulging tube but I kept my speeds down and replaced with an old tire until I got a new one. Another reason I generally don't throw away tires I replace after normal wear as they are still good emergency tires.

That tire is DONE.  The only way I would ride it is with a boot to get back to my car...as soon as I got home I'd be switching that puppy out for a new tire.

Agreed, DONT chance it, not worth it. Go for a run or put it on a trainer. Nothing good will come out of it on the road. IMO

If this happens during a race, use part of a GU wrapper if you have one to cover the hole on the inside. That will provide the protection needed from the tube bulging out. Also someone told me to carry a Straw and a blade to cut it to size in case of a blowout as well, but the Gu wrapper works just fine

I wouldn't ride on it but that's just me. I would hate to have a blow out at 20+ mph. I always have a $1 bill in my saddle bag just for this purpose. I've used it once to get home but immediately replaced the tire.

Thanks to all. I took the conservative route and put it on the trainer. I'm waiting impatiently for the new tire I ordered. I have a tire that I bought specifically for the trainer during the winter. The guy at the bike store said that it was meant specifically to be used on the trainer and won't wear out as quickly. Is there any reason I can't use that for the road?

Had a DNF with a conti gp4000 due to a side wall blowout....do not chance it , throw out the tire and get a new one or carry another tire with you...good luck

Yes, there is a reason you can't use that on the road. That tire is made of a very hard rubber compound for long life on the trainer. If ridden outside it offers no grip at all. Not safe to ride outdoors.

One procedure for changing a tire that you might learn from, but certainly don't want to follow precisely!
