Lake Wilderness Triathlon
60F / 16C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 19m 42s
Overall Rank = 11/78
Age Group = 40-49
Age Group Rank = 3/22
Pre-race routine:

No routine, just get everything ready.
Event warmup:

Swam a little bit to get acclimated to the water, then stood around to wait for the Olympic swimmers to finish.
Swim
  • 07m 33s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 43s / 100 yards
Transition 1
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

Had a hard time with tunnel vision in T1, spent too much time getting into socks and shoes. Ran in bike shoes because the grass was so wet.
What would you do differently?:

Go without socks, buy triathlon shoes, take deep breaths to get oxygen into my head.
Bike
  • 40m 31s
  • 14.3 miles
  • 21.18 mile/hr
Comments:

Went too hard at the start and finish of the bike. Take it easy next time and save something for the run. Heart rate monitor did not work. Had a blast.
What would you do differently?:

Check heart rate and cadence sensors before race. Back off on the bike to save something for the run.
Transition 2
  • 00m 54s
Comments:

I ran with my bike shoes on because the grass was still really wet.
What would you do differently?:

Try tri bike shoes so I can ride with my feet on top of the shoes, in the pedals.
Run
  • 29m 5s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

I need to learn how to run. Make sure my HRM is working.
What would you do differently?:

Take is easier on the bike so I have some energy on the run. Train harder.
Post race
Warm down:

None

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of running training. Went too hard on the bike section.

Event comments:

Good start of the year race. Could have used better course markings or volunteers to help with bike course. No post race activities. Only one drink station for sprint, no need for more.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?
