Pre-race routine:

Couple of firsts on this race, staying at our house vs up at the lake, no Alice at the race (either racing or spectating).

Got up @ 4:!5am , ate a half a PB sandwhich, a banana and some grapefruit juice. Made coffee but did not drink much of it.

Did my back exercises and hit the foam roller. Back and hamstrings were tight but not too bad.

Left house for race site about 4:45-4:50am
Event warmup:

Got to event site, ran into traffic going into Latta...which took about ~20mins to navigate. Was the last of ~15cars to park. Next time I'll need to leave a bit earlier... amazing difference that a few minutes makes at Latta parking.

Road bike the mile or so down into transition, racked the bike, picked up the chip and got marked. Went back to transition chatted up Pete, Chris and Scott then setup my transition. Wanted to do a warm up run but also needed T0. Elected to do T0 first which given there were only 5 port-o-johns and the bathrooms were locked, took ~45mins. That ate up all the warm up time and mental mapping of transition. Used the move from T1 to water as warm up, which worked pretty well but not ideal.
Swim
  • 17m 10s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 05s / 100 yards
Comments:

Would have been better but for the crappy course. Started in the blender -- trying to aim mostly at the turn bouy and keep majority of bouys to the left.

Lot of rough contact for the first half of the swim. Took a long time to settle in to my stroke

Transition 1
  • 02m 14s
Comments:

Overall pretty good but can still optimize

9/58 == 15%
79/339 == 23%

  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

Nursing source achilies tends so was not in the best run shape; having not run in weeks. Overall legs held up once back and legs opened up on run - first .5 was torture but I got thru it.
Post race
Warm down:

Fluids ( did not drink or eat on the run) only sipped at the infinit on the bike

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training and stressful week at work

Swim course was all kinds of out of whack, what should have been a rectangle was a snake course. Clearly lots of "negotiation" on the right route. Some people swam straight at the turn bouy that marked the peak of the course others kept all sighting bouys to their left. I elected to keep the bouys to the left and I know it added extra time to my swim

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.
