Sunny
Total Time = 49m 49s
Overall Rank = 13/259
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 2/12
Pre-race routine:

Woke up, drank protein shake, drove to race location
Event warmup:

jogged a mile around the running path and swam a few hundred yards in the pool
Swim
  • 06m 12s
  • 300 yards
  • 02m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

definitely took this too easy, but still passed a few swimmers who started well in front of me. they were starting people after the previous swimmer got 25 yards. collided with another swim who veered onto my side of the lane near the end too.
What would you do differently?:

swim harder, over state my swim pace like everyone else for a better start position.
Transition 1
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

my rack was the farthest possible from the bike exit, but i still need to work on my T1 time management.
What would you do differently?:

go faster
Bike
  • 21m 33s
  • 9 miles
  • 25.29 mile/hr
Comments:

they didn't allow passing for the first half mile or so coming out of or into transition. got stuck behind some guys soft pedaling at ~15mph at the start which knocked me out of the overall best bike split; missed it by 10 seconds to the guy who started the race 2nd in the swim TT start.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 2
  • 00m 45s
Comments:

once again my rack was the farthest from the bike finish. went better than my previous transitions this year, but still not where i was last year.
What would you do differently?:

go faster
Run
  • 20m
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

went well enough. i was hoping to go sub 20 on this run but missed it by a second.
What would you do differently?:

go a little harder. my HR dropped for the entire second mile, so there was room for some additional effort there.
Post race
Warm down:

walked around

What limited your ability to perform faster:

people blocking me on the bike course.

Event comments:

Good race and I liked the flat run course on the swamp rabbit and I thought the triple loop bike course was a really fun thing to do for a sprint race. I did not like that there was no way to verify that anyone actually did all three loops or that runners actually made it to the turn around point for the run before turning around. I also didn't like that the bike course was set up in such a way that did not allow for passing for such a long portion of the course coming in and out of transition. Not sure I would do the race again based on the lack of verification that everyone did the course correctly and allowing/requiring riders to block others.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

This is not an easy task, especially for the “9-to-5er” with family. But you can do it – all without sacrificing your marriage, job or family.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
