Total Time = 6h 00m 2s
Overall Rank = 266/559
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 69/101
Pre-race routine:

Woke up in hotel about 4:45am...had a V8, banana, and started a bagel and peanut butter...while sipping on a gatorade/water mix. Got ready, and headed to race site. Got there about 10 after six which was too late for me. Attached and fueled up my front water bottle. My wife was volunteering at the swim start and headed off. I headed to transition.
I had some stomach issues, took care of those and headed to transition.
I was just about all set and feeling pretty good, when I almost simultaneously kneeled on my sunglasses and realized I'd forgotten my drink for the run. After thinking for a few seconds and listening to the national anthem, I jogged back to my car with my wet suit on to pick up a pair of glasses and grab my drink. Made it back to transition with about 2 minutes to spare.
Event warmup:

None really. I probably should have stretched. I did jog to the car and back which was probably not a bad warm up.
Swim
  • 38m 25s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

My swim was pretty good I thought. I did take in a couple mouthfulls of water at the beginning of the swim and was surprised by how it choked me.
I was surprised I was slower than expected (by almost 2 minutes). Mi sighting was probably the best I've done so far, but I did go off course a little. I remembered at each buoy to remember to sight.
I also started to get a headache about the first buoy, so I went to breathing out as soon as I took my breath in.
2011 Swim was 37:14
2012 Swim was 37:29
So this year was a min slower.
What would you do differently?:

I think I definitely slacked off on my swim training this off season. I didn't follow any specific training plan for the Patriot so I didn't feel compelled to swim a great deal. I did do a few long sessions, but I felt totally wasted after each one.
Transition 1
  • 03m 49s
Comments:

I didn't do any practice for T1 practice, and felt like I did fine, but it took me almost 1 min slower than I had hoped it would.
2011 T1 was 3:59
2012 T1 was 2:55
What would you do differently?:

I think I did ok but should probably practice T1 at least once. I kept it pretty simple but just didn't hustle enough.
Bike
  • 3h 03m 50s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.36 mile/hr
Comments:

My bike was pretty good. I felt fine the whole time until the last few miles when I raised my cadence and slowed down. I really didn't push at all.
I did drop my front water bottle straw after the first lap. I didn't freak, I just drank my other bottle until I hit the exchange and got a water bottle...which I've never done before. Worked out fine.
What would you do differently?:

More long rides as I didn't do any rides over 39 miles. More bricks. I'd consider shorts with padding. My but is a little sore at the top of my legs.

2011 Bike was 20.1 mph followed by serious cramps that caused me to walk the entire run
2012 Bike was 17.2 mph
2013 was pretty good for me in that I didn't feel like I pushed hard, but I sped up a good 1.5 mph from last year and had no cramps on the run, but I put what I thought was a lot of work into the bike during part of the off season and maybe had hoped for miricles
Transition 2
  • 03m 48s
Comments:

I did this just about as good as I had wanted to. I specifically remember thinking bot as I was running in with my bike and running out of T2 that my legs felt "bad" "tight" "not good"

Run
  • 2h 10m 10s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

My legs didn't feel great coming out of transition, and I was worried that I had ridden too fast. I told myself to take it easy for the first 3 miles and then reassess. I felt good but just felt really sluggish. My legs felt achey, not bad in any other way, but I couldn't get myself to run faster.
I told myself after 6 that I could pick it up etc. I ran a pretty even pace the whole way.
Drank coke at mile 8, 10, and 11...along with water
2011 Run was 14:07 per mile
2012 Run was 10:56 per mile
2013 was a good improvement at about ~10 min per mile
What would you do differently?:

More brick runs
Post race
Warm down:

Just walked. Stomach didn't feel great, but felt generally ok.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough training I think. I trained for Boston, then kind of half assed my training for the Patriot. I wasn't consistent. I think I also need to do a better job of getting my gear in order the weekend ahead of time, not just my binder. Also, I need to book my room the same day I book the race.

Event comments:

This was my third year doing the Patriot and I expect to do it again next year. Nice venue, nice people, good amount of volunteers and plenty of anything I wanted.

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

Pain shows us how strong we are. After last weekend I am convinced of this. After 151 training hours of swimming, biking, and running, I flew to Sonoma County, California for the race.
