Set Up Events
75F / 24C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 36m 55s
Overall Rank = 159/339
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 35/43
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:15, typical breakfast of oatmeal and out the door by 5. Latta is about 12 mins form the house and wanted to get there early as the parking can be a problem. I was onsite at 5:30. Went to get my markings and chip - dropped my chip in the grass - in the dark. PANIC - finally found it after 5 minutes. My bike had an issue and had bike tech fixed (or so I thought) -the front wheel was hitting the brake hard. It was an eventful pre-race to say the least
Event warmup:

Went on a short run and wanted to hit the bathroom. Yeah the line was amazing - 5 porta potties and the line was 100 deep. Hit the water for a quick swim - shoulders were not happy as I went paddleboarding the day before which turned into a lot bigger workout than planned.
Swim
  • 17m 35s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 20s / 100 meters
Comments:

I sighted well on the way out; stayed wide and had relatively decent swim. the way in I got lost - the bouys just kind of turn into one and was way off course
What would you do differently?:

Need more open water swims - I was 17 seconds slower than last year
Transition 1
  • 02m 43s
Comments:

10 seconds faster than last year - good transition
What would you do differently?:

My sunglasses fogged up and I messed around with them - should have just chucked them
Bike
  • 48m 7s
  • 17 miles
  • 20.90 mile/hr
Comments:

Had a bike issue - when I got the the site my front tire was locked up and had bike tech fixed it. But i heard the well rub and finally opened the brake completely open which meant I had only back brakes. I know it cost me some time in the first 3 or 4 miles. I was 50 seconds slower than last year so the bike issue was a real one.
What would you do differently?:

It took me about 30 seconds to fix the wheel post-race - of course it was also in the light.
Transition 2
  • 02m
Comments:

34 seconds faster than last year (I had a much better spot this year) -
Run
  • 26m 32s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 17s  min/km
Comments:

I was 12 seconds faster than last year - progress. I ran hard given the conditions and felt like it was a solid run for me.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing -
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some water and talked to a bunch of folks; one of the reasons to run this race is to see so many people. Last year I beat a bunch of folks at this race and this year they beat me. Good for them; they have putting some impressive work

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Interesting race - worse on the swim, worse on the bike by a bunch, better transitions and run equated to a whole second add. My goal was 1:35ish and went 1:36. Certainly it was doable - in fact I think I was moire than capable but it did not happen.

This was my 4th triathlon in seven weeks (3 sprints and one olympic). Add in a couple of sprint bike time trials and my body let me know today that all this racing the last 53 days is taking its toll

Event comments:

The unofficial Triathlon World Championship of Charlotte - It is the largest triathlon of the season. My AG was super fast - my time would have been 23rd of 59 in the 40-44s and of course very well in my old group of MCs. I have seen this AG as super fast in the last two triathlons.

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.
