Boulder, Colorado
United States

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 44m 39s
Overall Rank = 783/1073
Age Group = F30-34
Age Group Rank = 50/87
Pre-race routine:

peanut-butter bread in trans, more pooping than i'd like
Event warmup:

three loops of the ows course
Swim
  • 20m 7s
  • 800 meters
  • 02m 31s / 100 meters
Comments:

new swim start meant a lot of crowding on the course. did a great job threading through the packs, but was not happy to have to navigate through the packs to begin with.
What would you do differently?:

maybe start in a different wave?
Transition 1
  • 02m 39s
Comments:

I think these questions are for a much more proficient triathlete than I ... felt like I was moving in slow motion.
What would you do differently?:

not hook my sunglasses on my aerobars. yes, it kept them from falling off, but it was a pain getting them off.
Bike
  • 48m 56s
  • 15 miles
  • 18.44 mile/hr
Comments:

bike was a tad crowded, but I felt like I rocked it pretty well. kept a higher cadence and a lower gearing for much of the first part of the race and I think it helped to both get the legs warm and save them. much experimenting will be needed with similar technique for peak ...
What would you do differently?:

re-teach myself gear shifting coming out of downhills to uphills.
Transition 2
  • 02m 12s
Comments:

it's a t2?
What would you do differently?:

since the run was just a 5k, maybe not body glide the feet. maybe try trislide instead?
Run
  • 30m 45s
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 06s  min/km
Comments:

legs were kind of yucky for the first mile. breathing ... was interesting. definitely felt better in the latter half of that run. glad I was able to outkick that damn old guy in hokas as well as like five other people in the chute.
What would you do differently?:

pace a little better; run smarter.
Post race
Warm down:

walking around, trying not to die.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

i'm fat and slow. and this is early season and I am nowhere near my peak form. hopefully.

Event comments:

would have gotten a four if it had been the first time I've done this race, but given as it was the third year in a row, I feel like it's regressed.

At mile ten I heard a noise like I had gotten paper in my spokes or something. I looked but saw nothing but a few seconds later my rear tire blows out.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

It was literally seconds after I started swimming that I felt the tightness in my chest. I couldn’t get a deep breath in due to the tightness of my wetsuit. I was being strangled by my wetsuit...

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.

The Boulder Peak bike course is legendary. It is, literally and named as such, one of the toughest bike legs in the country.
