Subject: So far, my 50 plan
What are your guys thoughts. I am looking to just finish my first 50 miler and my race is in September. This week I will hit the 40 mile mark for the total weekly miles for the first time. I usually do something like this Tueday 5, Wednesday 8-10, Thursday 5, Saturday or Sunday 20 or more (to peak at 30 miles). Again I am looking just to finish and it is hilly but not mountainous. I believe my peak run total for the week will be around 50 miles.Trying also from here on out to do all long runs on trails and aim for at least one mid week run on trails also. Do you have any suggestions or thoughts on my general plan? Thanks in advance.

I'm a total newbie to ultras but have been looking at 50 mile plans as I have my first ultra in two months. All the plans that I have seen have at least five runs a week. Are you biking and swimming too? Just curious why only four runs a week.

I'm still 'new' in this world as well, but overall I'm a "less is more" believer. I would not run 5x/wk to train for these, especially if the goal is to just finish.

For my first 50, I did a marathon in Dec., then 2 in Jan and those were my long runs. In between, I never ran more than 5 miles and only 3x/wk, but I do heavy cross-training. Finished the 50 with no issues and did another a month later with maintenance runs of less than 5mi. I'm not saying to go this route, but 5x/wk scares me as it would produce an overuse injury for myself.

In all reality, while I was definitely nervous about the distance of the 50, since it can be completed in 1 day, it never felt terribly harder than a marathon. Mentally I broke it up to 2 marathons and was fine.

That was my thought as well. I have seen from years of doing this that the less is more approach works well for me. Also working two jobs and 2 little kids at home makes it hard to get runs in. Those long runs seem very important and as long as I get those in I am hoping I will be alright. I am going to up the cross training as my biking has suffered from all the running. But heck I have the off season to get that back, right?!!

I would think you can get by with 3x/wk if you're crosstraining, especially if you have a solid base and fitness. Going couch-to-50, I wouldn't give the same advice.

Don't discount weights. Squats, lunges, stairmaster, etc. will build leg strength, and help on the hills!

Is this best for your schedule? Seems like a bit much to have those 3 runs back-to-back. However, I guess you'll get used to running on tired legs. I would space them out and do cross-training in between or on one of the shorter days. (but that is just me)

Wow! These plans sound light. But I am just getting ready to start training for my first 50 mile run.
These sound more like marathon training plans. Could be a fine line between enough training and too much training and getting injured.
I just want to finish under the 11 hour time limit.

I sometimes feel we try to do too much in training sometimes. My ironman I did the 13 weeks to a 13 hour ironman and people said it wasn't going to be enough. I even missed a long bike and run and cut out many weekly workouts. I ended up finishing in 13:25. Again not elite by any means but accomplished my goal. This 50 miler does freak me out more than the ironman though. All running with no breakup sounds like it could be brutal. I think I'm doing enough but as always scared I'm not.
