Swim
Comments: Sighting was made difficult by lots of buoys in the harbour same colour as the race buoys. Confusing. Sighting was further difficult because of wetsuit buoyancy. The Garmin recorded I did almost 300m more. What would you do differently?: Need to sight better, possibly get a different less buoyant wetsuit. Transition 1
Comments: Lots of fumbling and irregular riding while trying to get into the shoes. Bike
Comments: Lost two bottles because of irregular surface, first right out of T2, second after the second aid station as road conditions changed. I had not brought nutrition/gels relying on aid station and the energy drink in my bottles. I bonked at km 65 due to lack of nutrition and hydration. Saw lots of people drafting despite the no-draft rule. What would you do differently?: Stop at aid stations to get enough nutrition and drink, especially if bottles are lost on the road. Bring nutrition on bike. Transition 2
Run
Comments: Tried to catch up hydration and nutrition from the bike, at one point running on a too full stomach. From then took just one cup of water every time I passed the aid station. About half way through the run asthma symptoms started and got worse. Had left medicine in transition and thought about how to get back and take it. Decided to do the run. Tried to walk only when passing the aid station but had to walk frequently on the last 3km, in some cases ran less than 100m before walking again. What would you do differently?: Bring asthma spray on the run. Post race
Warm down: No warm down, straight to the medical tent. Got oxygen 15 minutes due to asthma. What limited your ability to perform faster: Asthma and lack of proper hydration/nutrition on the bike. Last updated: 2013-06-19 12:00 AM
