How much of an advantage/disadvantage is it starting in one of the last swim waves for a HIM. I feel like the faster you are the bigger the disadvantage, as you'd have to constantly avoid other swimmers.

It depends on how many waves and how far apart they are. In some big races you might be 30-40 minutes or more later which could make a difference on a warm day as you will run in warmer temps than others. If you are in a middle wave you might be caught and passed by later waves in addition to you catching earlier waves. Though that could benefit you if can find people to draft off as they go by. If you are a strong cyclist you will probably have to pass more people. I like to pass people because I get a little draft off each one as I skip forward. This assumes that there's not so much congestion that I'm somehow held back. Different ways to look at it I guess.

Unless you're in the first wave, you're going to run into BOP swimmers from the wave in front of you - no matter where you start.

IMO not worth fretting about as there's nothing you can do to change it.

It's a disadvantage on the swim for sure.  It can work to your advantage if you're a good cyclist as you can legally draft and slingshot off the slower riders from the previous waves for most of the bike ride.  Notice I said legally.

I first decided I was going to "do" a triathlon in 1994. It wasn't until 13 years later, in 2007 that I actually did. Why did it take me 13 years to get to the starting line? The swim!

The boat was being tossed around. Someone noted that there were whitecaps on the waves. Another guy said, “This is going to be challenging.” I began to wonder what he meant by 'challenging'.

At some point I remember thinking about the movie CAPE FEAR. This is what it seemed like when I was around a lot of people. It was just a lot of commotion of waves, arms and feet.
