Since I don't run more than 3 or 4 days a week and rarely can get above 20 miles and am slow as a turtle, I think I'm good. I do think all the other people in my age bracket should take this to heart and not push themselves very hard and slow down......

I turn 38 this summer. I'll come back and read this article in 2 years.

If triathlons haven't killed me before then.

Haven't read through the entire thread, but the article is silly and everyone here is right on.

I'd like to know which percentage as a population is higher:

1.  Men between 40-60 that participate in triathlon that have died of cardiac arrest

2.  Men between 40-60 that do not exercise that have died of cardiac arrest.

I would agree that the study (and other ones in the past) doesn't actually "prove" anything about the dangers of endurance sports.  As with anything, it's hard to generalize what is best for everyone since we are all different.  We have different training regimines, different diets, different family medical history, etc.

But that doesn't mean we should ignore the problem that healthy people do suffer from heart attacks.  Not just people who are involved with endurance sports either.  Certainly, endurance sports does put a strain on your heart, so I think the takeaway here is that you should go to your doctor for regular check ups to make sure you're in good health and that the activities you engage in will not put you in any danger.

You would be a bit naive to think that endurance sports is always good for everyone and that only overweight people, or people on high blood pressure medication are at risk for cardiac problems.

I am more concerned about endurance training and eventual onset of arrhythmia / a-fib than I am of cardiac arrest.

It's garbage. A compilation of opinions and nothing more. It is interesting that they pay a lot of attention to the risk of Tri swim vs marathon but fail to mention the very pertinent point that when you fall out while running you just fall over, not so in swimming. A lot of people die in bed every year, perhaps beds are deadly.

I quickly browsed an article in Men's Health that talked about doing a triathlon, and how it wasn't really that hard. With a "tsk!" I quickly turned the page while thinking, "Yeah, right!"

All you have to do is say you’re a triathlete and you intimidate the whole world. No matter how much you bench press or what you lift or how many squats you can do.
