I have to admit these look funny and may add time to transition but some of my friends swear by them.

What are people's opinions on using compression socks (covering foot and leg) or compression sleeves?
Advantages/ disadvantages of each?

I swear by my compression sleeves. Although I think it is all mental, I don't seem to get cramps while wearing them during a race. I have read there is no definitive proof they prevent cramping, however they work wonders for recovery.

I cannot wear either while exercising.  Compression on my lower legs causes my legs to get REALLY sore during and after running.  And I mean almost debilitatingly sore.  I had this problem at Alcatraz simply from running to T1 with my wetsuit still on the lower half of my body.  When I went to run later I had a lot of pain in my calf muscles...very similar to what happens during/after running in compression socks.  It's weird...and I may be an anomaly...but I absolutely cannot do it.  It's never gone well for me.

Now, for recovery...I love them.  I have taken to wearing compression socks on long drives and flights so that my feet don't swell.  It's awesome.

I tend to get shin splints in my left leg fairly regularly and use them for that. I run completely pain free if I wear them. Love them!

I use the thigh sleeves for recovery and have the socks for recovery and long trips in the air. I don't know how you could even get compression socks on in transition, they take me about 10 minutes each to get on when I am at home. The sleeves would be easier, but you're not doing much for your feet. I did just buy some compression shorts that go down to right above my knee. I have been using them for my long runs for marathon training and I have to say, I have had less hamstring issues than usual, so maybe there is something to them.

I have CEP compression sleeves since I used to get calf cramps after a long run - the sleeves entirely eliminated those. Also, although I don't have complete data to support this, I think my best times have come when wearing them.

BTW, they needn't take time in transition - wear them during the swim and the bike (BTW, I've seen wind tunnel tests that say they also make you more aero on the bike).

Downsides - well, I understand you're not supposed to wear them for more than 3-4 hours at a time (which kinda rules them out for much than olympics). Also, they do look pretty dorky.

For recovery: A definite suggestion by me, I swear by the PhD Smartwool socks for recovery so there's my two bits on that.

For Racing: Very doubtful that you'll receive a net time savings because of the extra time to put them on. Would love to be proven wrong on this, but I doubt that it's worth it at almost any level of competition.

Nope, not the only one! My calves and feet cramp up horribly in compression socks. I thought it was a fluke but every now and again I would revisit wearing them only to have my calves/feet seize up. I stop, take them off, start running sockless and I'm fine. They are great after but the devil for me during.

I love my compression socks/sleeves (I use my sleeves at work for example.... with dress pants and dress socks, no one knows the difference....), but I never wear them racing or training. For me, they have the biggest benefit with recovery.

Personally I am not a fan.  I tried them and I end up pulling them down around my ankles.  I like the neoprene sleeves better for injury.  Probably not a bad idea to wear on a plane and they will help with swelling if you have trouble with that.

I didn’t used to like to run slow. You begin to recalibrate your needs and wants and if-only you could jog an easy two miles, three times per week. Running is a gift.

On the long bike rides of 80+ miles I get very strong pain in my toes. I slow down my pace and I might recover, but when I hit the next hill it is back. Could this be some kind of circulation issue?
