Like a lot of us I have: 1) a pair of training and a pair of racing wheels; 2) A box full of various bike parts. I have a Dura-ace 13-21 titanium on my Hed3 racing wheel and just bought a new 12-26 Sram 950 to replace the one on my Reynolds trainer that pretty much blew up today. I race pretty flat terrain (coastal Florida), and train a bit more rolling terrain (yeah, we got hills [sorta] in the North Central part of this state). Just wondering what others use on their rear wheels?

11-26 almost all the time.

11-23 if I'm doing a really flat tri or TT

11-28 if I'm climbing some ridiculous mountain with extended grades over 12%.

I use have a compact 50/34 quarq that I swap between my road and tri bike.

I have a SRAM RED 11-26 that I use for both training and racing (I swap it from training to race wheels). I have a standard FSA 53-39 on the front and 650 wheels.  I ride both flats and hills with this set up.  I was afraid when I bought it that I would not be able to get up hills with the standard crankshaft, but it is smooooooth as butter!  I'm going to ride hills on it for the first time the season tomorrow.  I guess I should preface the above with the fact that I train on a road bike in the off and early season before switching to Tri bike training.

I use and 11-28, with a compact 50/34, for my area this is the most ideal setup, its not very flat and when you start riding in Muskoka and on the niagra escarpment my race territory some of the hills and climbs can be long ,steep, and very unpleasent. Even locally you are most often dealing with continiously rolling terrain with lots of steep river valleys to cross,so having a wide range gearbox comes in very handy.

I'm currently using a 13-25 with my 53/39 chainrings. It was a cheaper option than changing out the crankset to a compact.  I'm on east central coast of FL and rode the Clermont/Sugarloaf area with that combo.  Other than causeway and hill descents I've only ran out of gear a had full of times in training with serious tailwinds.

650c wheels gear you down to about the same as a compact crank on 700c wheels. I used to run 55/42 on my 650c Tri bike. Would go down to 53/39 for hilly courses. I run that bike now 50x17 fixed.

To the OP, just run what ever gear/cassette makes sense for that ride or race.

I've got a bunch of cassettes hanging on my bench, but most of the time use a SRAM 12-26 on my training wheels and an 11-23 on my race disc.

Like the OP, all my races are pretty much dead flat along the FL Gulf coast.  About the only climbing I do is over the Ringling Bridge from Sarasota to Lido Key.  The wild card for me is the wind, which can be fierce at times along the coast.

53/39 Up Front
12-25 on the Training Wheels
11-25 on the Race Wheels

If I get another cassette, it will be 11-23
