Expert 3145 Scottsdale, AZ | Subject: Anyone not use a multisport watch? My TGT is dead and it's time to replace it with something else. I never really didn't like it but will admit that almost every morning I sit outside my condo door yelling expletives into the air, at the amusement of others around, because the dang thing always takes forever to sync. Plus it just seemed to lose its ability to accurately track pace as it grew older; nothing horribly bad but it seemed to bounce around a lot more (from say 7min/mile to 8:30 when I knew I was running 7s or below) and ultimately just read slow on some runs. Anyway, I thought about getting another because well, it worked good enough for the most part and TGTs are dirt cheap. I then also thought about a Garmin variety watch but then I got this crazy idea about going away from an all in one and getting a few goodies. Namely something like an Edge 500 and then a standalone running watch. I never really cared for wearing the watch while cycling and an Edge looks like a great option for the bike, especially as I consider moving to power down the road, and then I could just slip a watch on as I'm headed out of T2. I dont' need a swim function on a watch because I really just don't care at OWS and the pool has those awesome digital clocks! Am I crazy? Who else does this? Pros and cons? Thanks! |

Member 5452 NC | Subject: RE: Anyone not use a multisport watch? I've considered this. I have a 910 that I don't wear in the pool. I would love a nice cycling computer, especially on that you could enter a route and follow (easily). The thing holding me back is the distance feature on the run. I like knowing my mileage without having to follow a pre-mapped route. I know, I know ... time>distance, but I like knowing the distance. |

Well I suppose I don't "need" it, actually I nailed my long run pace to a second this morning using nothing but strava on my phone tucked into my spi belt. But I'd prefer to have pace and HR when I'm out nailing temp runs and the like. Speedwork I'm fine with a stopwatch and a track. So my thought was something easy and cheap for a running watch that still has basic GPS. |

Not sure if it tracks HR but it's worth looking into. |

Regular 585 Pueblo, Colorado | Subject: RE: Anyone not use a multisport watch? When it comes to electronics, I'm all over the place. I have a New Balance HR watch that I picked up at target (with strap) for about $50 bucks. I use a Bontrager cycling computer on the bike, and occasionally I use an old Garmin 305 for running if I want a little more data. Lately, I've been carrying my phone while running, and have used the Strava App. It seems to be a little slower in terms of responding to changes in pace however. A couple of years back, I bought a Soleus GPS for my wife for about $100. Pretty basic, but it does the trick for her. They have one with a HR monitor for about $199. If you haven't checked out DC Rainmaker, his site is THE source for reviews, information, etc. |

Seattle | Subject: RE: Anyone not use a multisport watch? You could always go watch-less The only time I ever use one is when doing a really specific track workout, when there are multiple groups doing something different (so my coach can't call splits) and when I don't have a group to run with. Even then sometimes I forget. It's done wonders for my ability to "feel" a pace and get extremely in tune with my body. |

Expert 2192 Greenville, SC | Subject: RE: Anyone not use a multisport watch? i use the FR610 and Edge 800. Pretty good combination for me, the Edge is great for cycling. i couldn't imagine using a watch for cycling, and if you use a bike mount for the 310/910 then you have to take it off and put it back on in T1/T2. i also ride with cyclist and run with runners, a giant tri watch would probably get a lot of remarks... |

Master 1517 Grand Prairie | Subject: RE: Anyone not use a multisport watch? I'll be your worst advice... I use a computrainer indors with a Polar HR strap. Then I have a Garmin Swim for pool use, a Edge 800 for cycling and a 310XT for running, OWS and cycling (as well). Basically the 800 is better on the bike than the 310 or 910. The Swim is better in the pool than the 910... And well the CT is better indoors than a Garmin in conjunction with a powertap. Sooo. I would advice to get a 800 for the bike and a 310 for the multisport and a swim for pool swimming. Though that setup would still run you around (300+200+100) 600 USD, assuming you get good prices on all items. The 910 will set you back 400 USD, so that might be an alternative. |

Veteran 419 | Subject: RE: Anyone not use a multisport watch? I have a 500 for the bikes, Garmin swim for the pool, and 210 for running. In race settings I just wear my Timex stopwatch and have the 500 on the bike. No need to mess with changing or moving watches during a race. |

Hehe...I got my Timex on clearance for $9! That was about 5 years ago. I think if I replace the battery, I'll have a backlight again, but until the battery is really dead, I can live without. I do have a Nike Triax with a footpod. It doesn't pick up the heart strap any more, so I haven't used it for over a year and a half. I need to contact Nike. I've used runkeeper on an iPhone, particularly for long runs. |

Pro 5361 | Subject: RE: Anyone not use a multisport watch? After much agonizing, that's the decision I ended up coming to. I've got an Edge 500 on my bike and I run with my 405. Both reasonably priced and each better at what they do than one watch that does everything. FWIW, I also have a Swimovate Poolmate for swimming. The Edge 500 makes a much better cycling computer than anything that you'd wear on your wrist. it can display up to 8 variables, has all the power functions, battery lasts like 20 hours, easy to mount- everything you need. |

Extreme Veteran 643 , Guam | Subject: RE: Anyone not use a multisport watch? 910XT Same piece train and race almost every day of the week. I can function it in my sleep, when my hr is 200, when it is dark and when I'm so sweaty that I can't see the watch face. Took just 3min for it to lock onto satellites when I was in Micronesia last week. 910XT gives u wings :) Edited by spearit 2013-06-27 7:51 AM |

X3. $30 Timex I use to time runs and swims and a $50 Cateye wired cadence/speed/etc. computer for the bike. Those and www.gmap-pedometer.com ($0) to plan and measure run/bike routes and I'm good. |

Extreme Veteran 668 , Minnesota | Subject: RE: Anyone not use a multisport watch? How about a Garmin FR60 or 70? The footpod works pretty well, within .05 mile for me, can do HR, time, cadence and pace. I have a cheap computer on my bike already that I use to check avg speed and distance. The FR 60/70 can be had for fairly cheap. I bought mine used for $60 with the HR strap and footpod. |

Master 1457 MidWest | Subject: RE: Anyone not use a multisport watch? I was looking at Forerunners when a friend told me she bought a FR10 and would be willing to "sell" me her 410. I love it. It has a heartrate strap (that I haven't tried yet). I use it for pace, distance, time, calories burned. I'm hoping to try out the heart rate strap this fall. |

Bike I have the Bontrager Duo Tap computer, has speed/cadence Run - I usually use my phone with MapMyRun. I have been looking into a run specific GPS watch. Suggestions? I have looked at the Garmin 310xt, would solve my OWS problem as well (from what I gather though it does not actually track via gps though?, during the swim that is) |

145 | Subject: RE: Anyone not use a multisport watch? Your title is kind of misleading, I don't use a multisport watch but I don't augment it with other devices either. :-) I personally would go with a 910 if you want power that bad, unless you like taking multiple devices inside to synch and keep charged. You don't have to wear any watch as a watch on the bike. |

Expert 1224 Is this Heaven? No, it's Iowa. | Subject: RE: Anyone not use a multisport watch? 910. Love it in the pool, on the bike, and on the run. Oh, and it works like magic on triathlons. I'm a data junkie so maybe my perspective is a little off. Only issue I have had is with the HRM strap. Sometimes wants to be a little picky and throw weird high and low numbers out there. The price is painful though. I was able to justify it by having everyone in my family combine their Christmas / B-day / Father's day gifts into one and we bought it as a group.

Long runs I'd be ok and track workouts I never use GPS any way but all those in between tempo/threshold/etc runs I think I'd really miss it. I never use HR on runs though and don't really think I'm missing anything but I do like to use it, or at least be able to reference it, on the bike. I think I'm going to go 500 and a cheaper watch for the run. Still don't understand why people need a watch for the pool |
