Subject: HED Wheels
Hey everyone,

I have decided to sell my ZIPP tubulars in favor of some clinchers. I have found some HED wheels for a good price but I don't know anything about them. The front wheel is a HED Jet and the rear is a HED Deep. Any advice and/or recommendations?

"DEEP" wheels from Hed are pretty old, but without pictures it's tough to tell how old and if the Jet is from a similar era.

Older HED wheels are built on a narrow rim and will be a bit worse (speed wise) than the newer wide rim styles with 23+mm tires.

Depends on what the deal is too.

If the front say HED Jet (and not Jet 50/60/90) and the rear say HED Deep, then they are quite old. Not bad wheels mind you, but you're looking at something that's about 10 years, so you really need to know how they're been maintained etc. You don't want to get stuck withe replacing the hubs etc... that would pretty much make a good deal into a bad deal...

Why not a Flo 60/90 Combo and wheel cover?

BTW I have a HED Disc that I run on the velodrome (track bike) and love it. We also have pair of Flo 60/60 in the house that my wife rides and a disc cover for the rear.

I don't know if I'm allowed to link to an external site (got in trouble for doing that in the classifieds) but here is the link to the craigslist listing. I've asked the seller what year they are an I'm waiting for a reply. Thanks for all the input.

Those are quite old... but as long as the hubs are well maintained, the brake surface is clean and without any major marks/nicks, and ther fairing is not cracked, then $250 is reasonable. They not as fast as the modern HED's, but neither is the price on that level.

To be honest, I'm not looking to win any races...I ride for fun and fitness, so carbon wheels are not a must for me. I've ridden on an aluminum bike with aluminum wheels for years and just upgraded to a carbon bike with carbon wheels, which has been nice, but I don't want to deal with the tubulars I have right now. Would I be better off getting a good set of new aluminum wheels and forgetting about the carbon ones?

I concur. If all is well with them then that seems like a fair price.
