Hi Everyone,

I'm racing my first HIM. I typical don't carry water on my race pace days but do on long runs via fuel belt. Should I carry one on my run or will aid stations be enough? I'd prefer not to lug the belt but I don't want to be searching for water all the time either.

I've only go two bottles so it would only be back up anyway.

THanks in advance.

Check the race website or with the RD, but most races have more than enough aid stations so you won't need to carry anything.

I've yet to see an HIM that didn't have more than enough aid stations.  In fact most I've been in have stations every mile.  I also try to keep my races as simple as possible and this would just be one more thing to have to deal with.

Make sure your practice running with the fuel belt prior to the race to ensure you want to do just that.

Personally, I run with mine on anything HIM and longer.

I did the B2B half distance last year and the weather turned out to be much warmer than any previous years. During my run it was in the mid 80's so not unbearable but hot enough to need hydration. They advertised water stations every mile which would have been fine, but there was a 2 mile gap from approximately mile 4 to the turn around of the run. This meant a 2 mile run between these stations and then another 2 mile gap on the way back. I am a very heavy sweater and this was the downfall of my race. My last 4 miles of the run were very slow by my standards (which are not fast to begin with) and the dehydration was evident.

I learned my lesson from B2B and chose to run with my hydration belt about a month ago at the half distance in Charleson, SC. The water stations were spaced a mile apart on this race with no exceptions but it was still nice to have a drink whenever I felt like it instead of having to wait. The extra hydration led to a pretty substantial PR for me. I am doing IMLOU in a few months and you can bet that I will carry my hydration belt on that run even if the water stations are every half mile.

You know what you should eat. Yet you just don’t want to. Yuck—whole wheat bread, bran cereal, oatmeal, skim milk, spinach, fish, fruit for snacks and desserts.

As an athlete who shows responsibility by training hard, you'll miss the boat if you are irresponsible with fueling your hard worked body.
