This just happened in my area. A memorial ride was held last night for the 2 riders killed by a driver that was under the influence. At like noon on a Sunday. I just couldn't believe it. I ride out in this area often.

What a horrible story.  It's no wonder so many people are afraid to ride on the road...myself included.

i ride on the road more than i should. so far (crossing fingers) not even a close call. i know it will happen eventually, i just dont understand why people get so upset about having to go around a cyclist. they should be more like doctors....have lots of patients <--- not proud of that.

Anthony Gerike is charged with two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide.

You're damn right he is. Throw in some other charges, too; a seperate charge for DUI, and one for reckless endangerment, and whatever else you can think of.

That is a terribly sad story.  Unfortunately, we hear of this too often.  I work with guys who say bikes have no business being on the roadway.  I work for a company redoing the roads around a lake at a National Recreation Area so there are cyclists (dozens) riding through the park daily.  I try to explain to him the rights of a cyclist, but of course all I get are BS remarks.

I hope something is done to prevent these types of accidents in the future.  Reflectors and safety devices are obviously not going to greatly reduce the numbers.  Perhaps a microchip embedded in the auto's circuitry and a chip on all bikes produced, so whenever an auto is coming upon a cyclist, the driver is made aware with a noise, or a dash signal or something.  With all the technology out there, it seems that there should be something that can be done.

Our prayers go out to those families affected by the accident.

This is 5 minutes from my house and I ride this road alot.  Creepy feeling came over me when I got home from my race this weekend to hear the news.  The local state park bike trail dumps out onto this road and is an extremely popular road for cyclists since they can park their cars in the park and have easy access to roads with little traffic.  I hope they drop the hammer on the drunkard.

Me too. I hope the man who did this goes to jail for a really long time.

I've said it before...I think everyone should have to ride a bike as their means of transportation prior to getting a driver's license. This would go a long way towards "understanding".

Totally agree with that idea!!! You'd have to think as well that if this happened at noon, how many times has this guy drove home drunk before??? Absolutely appaling, IMHO they should throw the book at him.

How sad...I hate to hear/read about cycling deaths (or injuries).  It's unnecessary and horrible!  It's frightening.  I avoid the roads as much as possible too.

We just have to speak out when we have the opportunity.  And, do the Rides of Silence.
