Sunny
Total Time = 1h 28m 4s
Overall Rank = 110/281
Age Group = Clydesdale
Age Group Rank = 4/16
Pre-race routine:

Breakfast at hotel; drove to race; set up transition. That's pretty much it.
Event warmup:

Did a 10-minute swim to warm up.
Swim
  • 12m 33s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

Took it pretty easy for much of the swim. I still haven't really found my race pace.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Transition 1
  • 06m 31s
Comments:

Holy crap! The run from the beach to transition was about a 1/3 of a mile up hill.
Bike
  • 36m 15s
  • 10.5 miles
  • 17.21 mile/hr
Comments:

Fairly hilly course. Wish I had dome a bit more hill training.
Transition 2
  • 00m 55s
Comments:

Ach! I forgot to pull out of my shoes before getting to the dismount area, so I had to stop and unclip and then waddle in my bike shoes to transition, where I then had to take off my bike shoes before getting on my running shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Remember to get my feet out of my shoes before coming into the dismount area.
Run
  • 31m 49s
  • 3.3 miles
  • 09m 33s  min/mile
Comments:

One long hill for the first mile of the run. Hard! Then some more hills just to make it more difficult.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bit.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hills.

Event comments:

Good race, I just need to be better prepared for the hills, both on the bike and the run.

I struggled on the bike while climbing the hill portions of the course. I do fine on long straight rides but really have a tough time while hill climbing. Any advice or training tips?

When we get ready to train or race, we have a pretty fixed set of thoughts. We are unaware of how they affect our racing.

I’m terrified of biking hills and the triathlon I am registered for has several hills…on AND off road!! I’m willing to do whatever it takes to finish this triathlon. Any guidance?

It makes no sense to train hard for a year to hone that aerobic system only to have all that training undermined by a few anaerobic bursts on race day. So, how do you go about it?

A better bike is not the answer to meeting your performance goals. I mean if you gave Nike running shoes to a tortoise would he move any faster?
