Swim
Comments: The swim was predictable. Nothing too exciting, nothing to write home about. A bit slower than I was thinking I would do, but I'll chalk that up to meters vs. yards, drag from the tri top, and the included run to T1. What would you do differently?: No tri top, and put on my run top instead of the trip top in T1. Transition 1
Comments: Transition went pretty quick. I definitely passed people. It's the fastest T1 I've done. What would you do differently?: Gotta learn the rubber band shoe trick thing if I wanna drop time, I think. That or not towel off my feet. Bike
Comments: My best portion of the race. The goal was to top an average of 20 mph, and I did it! Honestly, I can't climb for anything, and it takes me a little bit to recover from any climb, but I really ripped it on the flats. For example, second lap, a guy who trains with a good local coach passed me after small hill #2, but I stayed with him and caught him on the flats following. he then passed me back on the slight incline. I then caught him and blew by him on the flat main roads. Gotta love flat smoothed pavement! What would you do differently?: I have seriously got to start climbing some hills. I need to build the strength. Transition 2
Comments: I thought this was faster than it was. Hmm... What would you do differently?: Maybe I need to look into better laces. Could have taken my feet out of my shoes early, I guess. Run
Comments: Worst 5K I've ever done. Having not run much at all in the last (three) month(s), it really shouldn't be surprising, except that I ran a 24 5K in a tri a month ago. The limiting factor wasn't my legs or knee, it was my lungs and gut. Anyhow, I jogged out the first half mile, but by that amount I knew I was going to have to run/walk. I got passed by the guy I passed on the bike after not too long. I was doing a 4/1 alternation, but by the time I got to the second one, I was toast, knew this was going to be my worst 5K ever, and had resigned myself to walking. I walked a bit, got back to jogging, and somehow managed to jog the last mile. I was starting to feel better by then. I managed a good sprint at the finish line (where are the cameras?). What would you do differently?: Get back to running regularly. I figured worst case scenario was a 24 minute 5K. I was wrong. Post race
Warm down: Crossed the line and caught my breath talking to my friend who came down to watch and take pictures. I got to spend some time talking to an Irish guy working in Kentucky who exercises race horses. We had met before the race and he had passed me twice during it (on the bike, then he got off course, then again on the run). Event comments: It was a good race. Looking forward to doing it again next year. Hopefully next year will be the year when I get it all dialed in. Last updated: 2013-01-03 12:00 AM

Showed up a couple hours early to register, grab a good spot in transition, and see the women's race. Registration was straightforward since I got there so early, though they were out of shirts my size. Picked a good spot in transition. There were lots of nice bikes near where I was, and one could tell the fast people were staking out their territory.
A guy who works for a local tri shop and is going pro this year actually started off women's field. Guess he had to be somewhere later during the men's race. Although, curiously he accidentally dropped a 50 in the snake swim. So did the first female. Guess that explains why he swam UNDER 4:00 including the run to T1. Yikes.
I got a small little jog in, and then swam 400m about a half hour before the race. The pool water was a nice temp. I practiced doing flip turns underneath the lane lines, and didn't like it much. Too awkward. So I didn't do that during the race.
