I seem to get flats on way too many rides. Probably close to 75% of my outdoor rides. I was in my LBS the other day picking up some tubes and the guy asks me why I need 6 tubes..? I tel him its because I ran out of spares and I have flats on both my road bike and tri bike... he looks at me perplexed and tells me that in all of his years of Ironman training he only recalls flatting 3 or 4 times.

Am I just unlucky, or do others flat this often? It usually bits of metal or nails, the occasional sharp rock... is this uncommon?

The one bonus is that when need be, I can sure change a flat fast.

Sounds like you have the worst luck ever or more likely need new tires

FWIW, I've had two flats so far this season, both during training (not a race).

Just a guess but I would say I average 2000 - 3000 miles between flats. I flatted last month (pinch flat due to a big rock I didn't see because I was being an idiot) and the last time prior to that was summer of 2012 sometime.
I use Continental Gatorskin hardshell tires or Continental Grand Prix 4-Season.

Could be that you are riding to close to the curb where most of the road debris builds up.

I probably average one flat a year.

Most of my riding is on my Shimano wheels with Gatorskins.

I've had two out on the road (same ride) this year and one in my basement.  All on the same tire which has since been replaced and none since.  I don't think I had any last year and maybe one the year before?  I usually train on Michelin Prorace or Continental GP4000s tires.

very rarely... probably the last time was at Rev3 Knoxville 2011, where I ran over glass and cut my Aerowing. And I ride quite a bit in fairly rough area's. I check my tires before every ride though and replace them when they get cuts in them if they don't look fixable.

I'm in way more danger of a pinch flat when I get in a hurry installing my tires.

Well Fingers Crossed I haven't had a flat in 3 years and many thousand miles, just luck probably. I also run race tires( bontager R3's right now) all season long and not a heavier more robust training tire like conti gatorskins or similar.

About once a season on the road. I used to flat once every 50 miles or so before I switched to Kevlar tires. I think it really is about the tires.

Also (you probably know this) when you get a flat, carefully look at the inside of the tire for the cause of the flat or you will get that same flat again...

Unlike most other riders that have posted I actually flat quite often, to the point that its getting pretty annoying. I run brand new conti GP4000s tires, run them at 120psi, i ride pretty nice roads (not many pot holes/debris on roadside/etc), I am an athletic 240 lbs, and I flat like 50 % of my rides it seems like. i have started packing 2 tubes and CO2 cartridges just in case. The other day I ran over a rock (a small rock I must add) and got a flat. It's getting annoying and expensive to keep buying and changing tubes...any advice? Because flatting takes all the fun out of riding for me plus I have a race in 3 weeks and really don't want a flat during it.

Have you ever thought of trying a tubeless setup (Stans, Shimano, or Campy/Fulcrum) and running sealant. I still run tubes in my road and tri bikes, but tubeless in my mtn bike. By the end of the year I plan on having a tubeless road setup too. Tubeless on a mtn bike is the best investment you can make and it has convinced me to make the switch on the road bike too. My issue with my tri bike is it is 650c and nobody makes tubeless 650c tires or rims yet (and sadly probably never will).

You likely need new tires. Try Gatorskins for training. You should flat less than a few times per year, even with IM-volume training.

I was getting flats regularly. I bought gatorskin tires and put electrical tape along the inside of the tire and haven't had a flat since.

Okay since the OP has the point that he needs new tires, I'll add a new question.

What tires do you recommend that are faster than the heavy duty gatorskin type but also are not prone to flats?

I am getting more flats than usual this year and I think it is due to the cheap tires that came on my Fuji, I should get some new tires but I don't want a heavy slow gatorskin but I also don't want to flat. Any suggestions?

I hear that Panaracer T-Servs are the bike messenger tire of choice.  That's what I use and have had only 1 or 2 flats ever, although I am not packing on 10k miles a year either...

After you have established the Ironman goal, the most important factor outside of the training is which race to choose? What is your best sort of course, hilly, rolling, flat?
