Overcast
Total Time = 2h 42m 50s
Overall Rank = 145/204
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 17/17
Pre-race routine:

Breakfast was 1 banana, 8oz coffee and 8oz OJ. Got to race about 1 hour before. Ate 1 gel + 8oz water 15 min before start.
Event warmup:

Tested bike for 2 miles and light jogging for warm up. Wore fleece clothes to keep body temp up prior to swim.
Swim
  • 31m 59s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 57s / 100 yards
Comments:

Water felt great temperature wise. I was zigzagging a fair amount. Had a hard time finding anyone to draft off of or sight off of. Need practice pacing at this distance. The run from the beach to transition was uphill and long. I think my in water time was about 30:20.
Transition 1
  • 00m 49s
Bike
  • 1h 22m 57s
  • 24.5 miles
  • 17.85 mile/hr
Comments:

Lost a water bottle. Helped a guy with a flat by donating some CO2, which probably added about 1 minute.
What would you do differently?:

Train for the bike more.
Transition 2
  • 00m 39s
Comments:

Need to loosen yankz more.
Run
  • 46m 25s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out pretty good around 7:20 or so pace. Then I hit some hills. I wanted to pick up the last 3 miles but then I could tell I was running low on energy. The last 1.5 miles was mostly down hill but I could not push it because I could tell I was going to cramp. I did my best to maintain and I'm guessing my mile splits were all very even. I nearly cramped at the finish. I had to keep jogging slow for about 5 minutes after the finish because multiple muscle groups in both legs were about to spasm.
What would you do differently?:

Needed to drink more on the bike but lost a whole bottle. The combination of quad fatigue from the bike (I couldn't push the down hills at all to make up for the slow uphills), low glycogen and a hilly course all added to my time.

From couch potato to a tri in 8 weeks. It was the most fun I've had in a long time. The race organizers had it down and there were no problems at all. This was the perfect first tri, in my opinion.

My expectations for the quality of this years’ Triathlon world championship were fulfilled. This was because of the superb location that is like no other along with having the top triathletes present.

There is a marvelous destiny out there waiting for you too, but only if you are willing to take chances and put yourself on the line.
