Pre-race routine:

Woke at 3:00 a.m. in order to drive to race site, pick up packet, and set up transition. Breakfast was bagel with peanutbutter, banana, and cup of coffee. Transition set up near bike in/bike out. Walked around event site mingling with club members. Light stretching.
Event warmup:

There was a pre race swim warm up which I did not take part in. Probably should have considering my swim time.
Swim
  • 32m 44s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 11s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swim was a bit rough at the beginning with a higher than expected amount of contact with other athletes. Finally started to get into clear water after rounding 1st bouy and get into a rhythm. Stayed relaxed and was able to sight bouys without too much difficulty, although I had to keep readjusting my course.
What would you do differently?:

Sight more often. Seemed I kept zig zagging in the water to stay on course. Swim time much slower than expected. Need more open water swim practice to work it out.
Transition 1
  • 01m 59s
Comments:

Felt slow, trouble getting my helmet fastened, but stayed calm.
Bike
  • 1h 08m 9s
  • 40 kms
  • 35.23 km/hr
Comments:

Flat and fast course. Stayed in the big chain ring the whole time and tucked into aero for about 95% of the ride. A few rough patches in the road
Transition 2
  • 00m 42s
Comments:

Felt good off the bike, legs strong.
Run
  • 43m 30s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 07m 03s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt good off the bike. Plan was to not go out too hard on first 5K then, pick it up. Did not run with gps watch and had my regular watch running with total time only, no splits. Wish I would have had a split time for the run to guage how hard to go on second lap.
What would you do differently?:

Pay closer attention to my run splits and effort.
Post race
Warm down:

Nice massage post race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim was definitely disappointing for me. Not sure why my time was slower than usual.

Event comments:

Good local race that is very organized with an experienced RD. Swim is on private property at a person's residence in small lake/glorified pond. Bike is flat and fast on county roads with a few rough patches. Run is all on gravel road.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

This summer, I am planning on doing three triathlons. What should my strategy be for training, tapering and resting during, before and after each race?

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
