I went to check out the race I am doing this weekend and I found this...

 photo IMG_0760-CopyII_zpsa082b6c1.jpg

I asked the Race Director, who was there helping and supervising the race set up, if we were going to do the swim leg. He told me not to worry about it at all "the County is short staffed, so they put these signs since they can't control and supervise the lake for swimmers".

Based on this, would you race or not??

The sign plus the yellow tape would be enough for me to say No. Try looking at the counties web site to see if there's is any mention of it. While I would doubt the RD would get permits if it was unsafe, i would be a bit wary.

Not in Miami, don't worry! This tri is in the Orlando area and the swim is in a lake (not sure about the name of the lake though)

A couple of years ago I was at a race where the swim was cancelled because of high bacteria count (was in Fla but in the gulf, it was in August and the RD said that gulls had been camping out in the cove and driven up coliform bacteria count). Knowing how warm the gulf (and inland lakes) get down here I have little doubt that bacteria counts can get high for all sorts of reasons. So no, I wouldn't swim there. But if the signs are there in February then I would wonder. Gotta wonder the thinking of the RD on this count, isn't he/she opening up for legal issues if race is conducted? Not great judgement. What race is this (so I can avoid)?

Is that lake Mary Jane at moss park? If so, the park website says swimming was to be allowed starting yesterday.

Vermont tests water quality often and posts the results up on a website. I once went swimming at a lake where there was a no swimming sign posted. I got sick with a cold a day or two later. Hard to say if the water was the cause, but I won't do it again.

So what was the verdict? Did the swim go on? Did you do it?

Yes, we did swim!! I asked local people that were doing the tri and they all told me the same version as the RD, plus that testing was done and that the water was good. It was a great race, nice bike and run course, well organized, lots of volunteers, and safe for the athletes. All we can ask for.

Not sure if i will repeat as it is far from home (i did it this time because i was in the area for a business trip), but i wont hesitate to do it again if the race was close by where i live.

6 of us in my family and extended family did a tri in Northern MN and we went out to breakfast, where we read the head line in local paper that said it was unsafe to swim in the lake the tri was in. None of us got sick.
