Capital District YMCA - Guilderland Branch
75F / 24C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 30m 58s
Overall Rank = 189/261
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 6/13
Pre-race routine:

Set up T2, got body marked, drove to start, set up T1, went back to car to finish coffee, banana, luna bar, a little G2... walked to start. Used the bathroom while wave 1 was going off.... hung around and cheered on other BTCers
Event warmup:

None really. Couldn't get in the water first, and wouldn't want to spend a second extra in there anyway....
Swim
  • 08m 24s
  • 325 yards
  • 02m 35s / 100 yards
Comments:

I don't understand why my asthma kicks up in races. I was ok first 200 yds or so, then started getting winded, needed to take breaks, by last buoy, I realized how restricted my breathing was, and that it was asthma, despite inhaler, and then just pushed through it. I haven't had this problem in any swims, OW or pool, this year. Well, Father's day sprint, but thought it was nerves.
What would you do differently?:

Figure this asthma thing out, where my wetsuit, I don't care how short and hot it is.
Transition 1
  • 02m 46s
Bike
  • 38m 53s
  • 11.72 miles
  • 18.20 mile/hr
Comments:

I think this was my strong point. I made an effort to not go too hard, despite what my run results suggest.
What would you do differently?:

Be stronger on the run so I could go even more on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 44s
Comments:

I think this went well
What would you do differently?:

Drink more water, since I didn't anticipate the last 2 water stations to be out of water when I got there.
Run
  • 39m 11s
  • 3.25 miles
  • 12m 12s  min/mile
Comments:

I was mostly comfortable on the run - I did walk the water stations and the up hill in the neighborhood and part of the up hill at the end.
What would you do differently?:

Have water available at all of the water stops, try to go faster on the flats and down hills.
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of walking, then I did stretch!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need to get in better shape, especially on the run and the swim.

Event comments:

Running out of water at the last 2 water stations (the nice volunteers stayed to cheer us on though) during a heat wave, when the OLDER folks are in the last couple of waves just isn't acceptable. I wish they could find a better body of water to swim in, which would change the bike course, hopefully to a less populated road, although GREAT job with police and volunteers on every intersection and corner - and figure out how NOT to end the run on that hill.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.
