Total Time = 3h 14m 48s
Overall Rank = 395/551
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 19/31
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:15. Ate a bagel with peanut butter and banana. Prepared my PowerBar Perform bottles and water bottles. Made it to transition by 5:20 AM.
Swim
  • 42m 27s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 50s / 100 meters
Comments:

Terrible, terrible swim. The water was crystal clear, no chop whatsoever, but I immediately panicked when I got into the water. Also, my sighting was terrible. This is due to not enough open water swim practice.
What would you do differently?:

Get more open water swim practice. Lots more!
Transition 1
  • 06m 18s
Comments:

This is the worst T1 I have ever had and am ashamed to put my time on here. I forgot EVERYTHING when I set up transition. I forgot to get my gels out of my transition bag, so I had to go digging for those. I forgot to get my socks out of my transition bag, so, another minute digging for those. But worst of all, I couldn't find my bike. I ran to 2 wrong racks when I finally spotted my bike yet another rack away. Horrible!
What would you do differently?:

I need to make sure that I have EVERYTHING set up in transition perfectly before I start my race. I should have had a checklist. Also, I need to make sure I practice finding my rack from the swim in before every race. I hope I never see a 6+ min transition time AGAIN!
Bike
  • 1h 25m 33s
  • 38 kms
  • 26.65 km/hr
Comments:

Overall an average bike for me. Could have pushed it a little harder, but wanted to save my legs for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Push it more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 44s
Comments:

Nailed this transition. Everything went smoothly.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster.
Run
  • 58m 48s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 09m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt great throughout the run. Thought I easily ran 8 minute miles. Was disappointed I was running just under 10 minute miles. Perhaps it's because it was a trail run? Not sure, but definitely could have pushed harder here. The heat was really getting to me. It must have been in the mid 80s.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bit with my boyfriend and my dad. Drank a nice refreshing beer from the beer tent.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Insufficient OWS training. Poor transition planning.

Event comments:

I think they could have increased the amount of the port-a-potties outside of transition. Once transition closed there was a good 15 minute wait to use one.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

I started riding this spring with the Carnac shoes on Look pedals (with plenty of float). About five minutes into a ride I get sharp pain on the outer edge of my feet, just behind the pedal.

I’m a 240lb man, and I run relatively long distances. How would you recommend training for marathon and IM distances as heavy as I am?
