Korff Enterprises

Sunny
Total Time = 2h 39m 18s
Overall Rank = 724/3421
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 655/2372
Pre-race routine:

Get up at 3:30. Take a shower and visualize the race plan for the day. Eat an uncrustables and a banana. Start drinking water. Take a bottle of gatorade to the transition area and drink that before the swim start. We started later than expected. I had a gu 20 minutes before getting in the water. I should have eaten more.
Event warmup:

None allowed. Mental preparation and loosen arms up.
Swim
  • 20m 36s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 22s / 100 meters
Comments:

Right in the middle of my AG. I actually did better two years ago on this swim; however I think I was more tired that time coming out of the water than I was this time.
What would you do differently?:

Swim towards the middle of the river even more. Last time I was way too far left. This time I had people on my left, but I should have steered even further right.
Transition 1
  • 04m 15s
Comments:

Stupid people don't listen and don't have their bikes in an easy enough gear on the way out of transition. As a result they fall down and almost into me. Boo.
What would you do differently?:

This was a fast transition. I opted for no socks which was a good move. I put my race belt on here instead of for the run and I might consider not doing so.
Bike
  • 1h 12m 19s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.65 mile/hr
Comments:

My average cadence was higher than usual because after dropping my chain I was scared of the biggest gear.
What would you do differently?:

I dropped my water bottle at mile 2 and as a result had dehydration problems when I started the run. I dropped my chain around mile 4 and lost 30seconds or so of time. I wish neither of these things happened.

I went too hard considering the lack of hydration and paid for it later.
Transition 2
  • 01m 38s
Comments:

Got my wheel caught on the bike next to mine racking. The bikes were really jammed in there. I was very quick getting out of my cycling shoes and into my running shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Learn flying dismount and leave shoes on bike.
Run
  • 1h 00m 31s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt terrible just about the entire time. I went into 2mins run, 30s walk mode right away. The lack of hydration from losing my water bottle surely didn't help me here. I was over a minute off the pace I wanted to be at.
What would you do differently?:

Dial it back on the bike a bit and have stronger legs left.
Post race
Warm down:

Cool off in the shade and wait for everybody behind me to finish. Cheer at the chute, keeping an eye out for the people I know.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I lost time when the chain dropped and I lost energy when the bottle dropped.

Event comments:

You can't beat the hometown race.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

I just finished the NYC marathon on Sunday and I think I'm going to venture into triathlons. I am doing an Olympic distance and I want to do a 70.3 next year too. Any advice?

The ONLY way to compete in my first triathlon was to do it on my BMX. I’m no professional—nor do I aspire to be one, I just want to be fit and healthy.

One of my fears, besides the radioactive material content of the Hudson River, was the water temperature. I found the water was much warmer as I inched closer to the holding dock.
