Total Time = 2h 43m 14s
Overall Rank = 108/376
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 12/34
Pre-race routine:

got to transition at around 6:00 to setup. Had plenty of time to relax and visualize my race.
Event warmup:

300 yard swim warmup in the lake. Water was warm! 78 degrees - wetsuit legal :-(
Swim
  • 25m 6s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 32s / 100 yards
Comments:

The start was originally supposed to be an in-water start. For some reason, the organizer changed it at the very last minute to a beach start. They did the elite wave as an in-water start and then everyone else was a beach start. It was not cool to change this up at the last minute.
What would you do differently?:

Swim was great.
Transition 1
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

wetsuit stuck on ankes. Killed a few seconds there.
Bike
  • 1h 16m 54s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.55 mile/hr
Comments:

powered up all of the hills. Felt good. Didn't really leave enough in the tank for the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

took a bathroom break
Run
  • 58m 3s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 09m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

got very overheated. then was getting chilled the last 2 miles even though it was 80 plus degrees out with no shade. Walked for 100 yards or so at mile 4 and 5 to get composure back. This run hurt.
Post race
Warm down:

light stretching

Event comments:

I felt that this race was very poorly organized this year. This is my 3rd year doing the race and although it is a smaller event, it needs to be better than this. The change of the swim start, lack of signage and warning at the bike turns (where lap 1 goes straight and lap 2 turns) and the volunteers that couldn't keep a car from cutting me off on the bike all point to poor organization. I was very disappointed. .

Awesome swim! I think everyone was feeling it on the second lap of the run . . . it was getting hot out there. I agree that beach start was kind of a bummer and they needed to better manage the turn-off on the 2nd loop of the bike, but I was otherwise pretty happy with how they managed the race.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

I got about a minute into it and, despite bracing myself against it for months, I panicked. I could not get my breath. I said, "I can't do this, I can't do this."
