Age Group Rank = 39/40
Pre-race routine:

Set up transition, I wasn't feeling hungry so I had a granola bar (210ish calories) and sips of espresso.
Event warmup:

Went into the water to dunk my face in and acclimatize to temperature, as I opted out of a wetsuit. I took a gel before we hit the water.
Swim
  • 19m 21s
  • 500 meters
  • 03m 52s / 100 meters
Comments:

Strong start, no panic, no shock to the water temperature. Was feeling really excited that I was in the process of my first triathlon. Started to get very stressed when I couldn't get to the first buoy, and a girl kept swimming into me, or maybe I was swimming into her. Swam a lot in the wrong direction, current put me quite off course. I hung off a few water crafts for breaks and give myself time to recompose. I considered bailing after I turned the last buoy, but it was too close for me to give up and I really wanted to get on my bike. I pushed through and went for it and didn't stop swimming until my hands hit the sand.
What would you do differently?:

Practice sighting, swimming with currents,
Transition 1
  • 04m 50s
Comments:

Everything was laid out perfectly, had no trouble at all. I walked all the way to transition to catch my breath. I had set everything up really well for myself.
What would you do differently?:

Had no trouble at all. Maybe I should learn the best way to unrack my bike.
Bike
  • 50m
  • 20 kms
  • 24.00 km/hr
Comments:

I wore sneakers because my clips haven't arrived. I had an absolute blast, we shared a course with the Olympic and Half Iron-ers.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, great start. Great bike ride.
Transition 2
  • 01m 59s
Comments:

I ran down the wrong aisle, so that was dumb and cost me time. The bike racks were also a tight squeeze.
What would you do differently?:

Go down the right aisle.
Run
  • 36m 2s
  • 5 kms
  • 07m 19s  min/km
Comments:

It was a great run, my stomach wasn't handling the Gatorade well, so I was pretty uncomfortable throughout the run.
What would you do differently?:

Stick to nuun water, DON'T drink Gatorade -- it just doesn't work for me.
Post race
Warm down:

Hung out and walked around

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training

Event comments:

I had a great time, the course and volunteers were excellent. I wish I had been able to navigate the water better.. but that was my own fault for not getting into open water more.

Way to go triathlete. I did a similar thing my first sprint. I had not OWS swam that year at all. I ended up with similar results to you. Still had a blast though

Congrats on your first race Barb!  I raced the half, and I agree, the current out there was tough!  Glad you were able to push through and finish.

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

Knowing where the fluids are, how they will fit on your bike, how much to reach for, and when to reach for it should be understood prior to ever setting foot on the course.

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
