Just raced a sprint last Sunday. Had a good/fun race. The weird thing is when I woke up on Monday morning I was having some pain in my shoulder... I'm thinking that it was from the wetsuit. I've worn the suit for about 5 or 6 races and never had pain before. The swim distance was no problem, so it wasn't an overuse thing. Any thoughts??

What sort of bike do you ride? Road or tri? I had the arm rests adjusted outboard a bit and it eased the pressure I was feeling in my shoulders.

It could be a simple tweak that was caused from some kind of over rotation of your shoulder or hand during your swim.  See how it responds over the next day or so and decide if you need to stay out of the pool for another week.

I also think it could have something to do with your position on the bike too.  If you are riding a TT bike try, as the last post suggests, spread your aero bars slightly.  You might also make sure you're not stretched out to far behind the aeros.  Your shoulders should be nearly 90 degrees to you elbows.

Thanks for the replies. I have a caad 10 with aero bars. I train in aero all the time and have never had a shoulder issue. I swim quite a bit and have never had the shoulder issues. It was the first time in a while that I wore the wetsuit and, bam, my shoulder started hurting. Just hoping I don't need a new suit.

I tend to get a little bit of tendinitis in my shoulder at odd times . . . particularly when using paddles for the first time in a while or something along those lines. According to my sports medicine doc, the best thing to do is to rest it for a few days and give it an ice massage. Just freeze water in a paper cup, then peel the cup back an inch or so and massage your shoulder with the exposed ice. If it is tendinitis, this has always helped me.

Good luck.

I get a very bad shoulder pain (left side only) when on the bike for over 45 minutes. The pain seems to be between my shoulder blades but only on the left side.

Apparently I have tendonitis in my left shoulder and will start PT next week. Are there drills/ strokes that I can do that won't keep my shoulder from healing?

I recognize that my 45 minute jog Wednesday night does not really count as a ”long” run, but for me it was! Yesterday I felt fine…but man, today the legs are SORE.

Yesterday I was a little sore, and today, whenever I bend over to pick something up, standing up again hurts badly. Have I done some sort of permanent damage? What can I do to rehab this area?

Often I also see an imbalance in the front muscles of the shoulder, such as the pectoralis, and the back muscles, such as the rotator cuff and shoulder blade stabilizers. I would recommend:
