Running Fit

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 25m 24s
Overall Rank = 176/419
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 23/50
Pre-race routine:

Arrived early as usual, put gear together, changed into race shorts, sat in var with air on until 5:30. Tried to stay hydrated prior to start, water and Gatorade. Double checked gear in transition before start.
Event warmup:

Waded in water until start, arm stretching.
Swim
  • 15m 35s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

The plan was to take it easy on the swim and conserve some energy due to the heat. Drafted and/or stayed with buddy the entire swim, he had on a white tri suit that just glowed underwater.
What would you do differently?:

Again, last 100 needed to sight better, was constantly pulling to the left and having to correct. Caused me to sight more than I wanted to which slowed me down.
Transition 1
  • 01m 29s
Comments:

Had a great transition location, again.
What would you do differently?:

Get a top of the line tri top that fits. The one I brought wouldn't have been good in the water, so put it on in transition. Although it went on very well, if I didn't have to put it on it would have been faster.
Bike
  • 36m 18s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 20.33 mile/hr
Comments:

Major bike PR, was attacking the downhills and that helped me on the climbs, which I attacked as well. Goal was to not let speed fall below 10mph - accomplished.
What would you do differently?:

More riding on my bike on the roads, still spending majority of time at the gym on the trainer.
Transition 2
  • 00m 51s
Comments:

Good transition, ran with Nimbus shoes which went on super easy with my speed laces.
What would you do differently?:

Run with bike, kinda just strolled to my spot.
Run
  • 31m 10s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

Couldn't get my legs coming out of transition, had to walk for a minute, then kept a walk run pace until the end. Calf was cramping a little, quads didn't want any part of running.
What would you do differently?:

Same as last report. Quicker brick transitions in training to get legs use to running off the bike. Need to get faster, this is where everyone blows by me. A 9something /mile time loses lots of time.
Post race
Warm down:

Just walked around, meet up with my kids.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need new bike, and faster legs. Could lose a couple lbs as well.

Event comments:

With it being as hot as it was would have liked to see one additional water station to help keep cool.

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

A product review of the Louis Garneau Tri Air Triathlon Shoe. After nearly two years of testing, see how this shoe performed. Currently being replaced by the Tri Air 2.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.
