Pre-race routine:

Up at 515. Clif bar and water for breakfast. Loaded bikes onto my car rack and headed the whole 3 miles to the race start
Event warmup:

None really
Swim
  • 23m 38s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

swim was S to N (usually the other way around). Little to no current help. I breathed on my right side the entire time (can bilateral but more comfortable breathing right) and took in a bit of water on the swim. Got kicked in the face by a woman breast stroking around the first turn buoy. Sighting must have been a pain for most people as I saw a lot off line and couldn't find anyone to draft off.
What would you do differently?:

breathe on my left
Transition 1
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

Everything went good in T1 with the exception of the bonehead who sat down infront of my bike to put his cycling shoes on. I attempted to go around him picking my bike up over my head to do so. A shoe feel off the clip thankfully I noticed before leaving T1 but still had to turn around to go find it
What would you do differently?:

What could I do?
Bike
  • 1h 04m 28s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 23.27 mile/hr
Comments:

Improved my bike spits again. Little more breeze than last race. The bridge right at the turnaround was a little tough in the headwind. Avg 17-18 over the bridge. Started cramping the last couple miles. I think it was the salt water I drank from the swim
What would you do differently?:

Not try to drink the ocean
Transition 2
  • 01m 10s
Comments:

Not bad. A clutter entering T2. Forgot to take my pre run gel
What would you do differently?:

take my gel
Run
  • 43m 57s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

took 3 miles to get rid of the cramps that began on the bike. pretty uncomfortable run.
What would you do differently?:

run faster?
Post race
Warm down:

Walked to get water, coke, and a watermelon. Does that count?

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Stomach cramping

Event comments:

Great race. I also had a tough time on the swim course. All yellow caps made it hard to spot a yellow buoy. Probably added 1-200 yards to my swim on the way out to first buoy.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).
