Toronto Triathlon Festival

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 22m 36s
Overall Rank = 80/273
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 10/25
Event warmup:

unable to warm up. access to water was denied. Male athletes and junior elites were able to warm up but women's waves were pushed to the back of the pack and we were unable to gain access to the water.
Swim
  • 16m 7s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 09s / 100 meters
Comments:

I really think the race organizers need to rethink the swim course. Either ditch the male/female separation so that waves can be more easily balanced or provide an opportunity for swimmers to access the swim course so that they are familiar with the sighting of this particular course. Access to warm up is crucial. Providing an opportunity for the men and juniors, but not the women is an unfair advantage and discriminatory.
Transition 1
  • 01m 35s
Bike
  • 36m 22s
  • 20 kms
  • 32.79 km/hr
Comments:

Loved the bike course! Fantastic speed. room to move. Just a ton of fun!
What would you do differently?:

I think I could have pushed harder.
Transition 2
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

The centre lane in transition was blocked off for the sprinters but not the olympic distance athletes. It meant additional time to move around the racks. the centre lane should be kept open for both races allowing for smoother transitions.
Run
  • 26m 48s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 17s  min/km
Comments:

I knew my run would be lacking. Having come off too many foot injuries it was going to be the weakest element. Overall not bad but I have work to do.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

- Lack of warm up for the swim
- congested swim course
- changes to transition while on the bike course
- poor run

Event comments:

The swim needs to be addressed. Waves need to change, separation of the sexes need to change, access to the swim course needs to change.

Overall: 0/273
Performance: Average
Suit: Orca 3.8
Course: Congested. The women 30-44 had more than 40 swimmers in the wave than the other female waves. In a very technical swim where there were many turns and narrow lanes it made for a very congested swim. Plus waves merged as swimmers struggled with the water temperature - even with wetsuits. You couldn't easily see the 3 and 4 buoys. Difficult to sight.

It's interesting what you say about the swim.  I did the olympic and the experience was similar.  Our wave was huge and it was a very crowded 'rough' swim.

In spite of it all you had a great race!  Congrats.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

Any good race director will go over the triathlon swim course directions many times.

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
