Toronto Triathlon Festival
80F / 27C
Overcast
Total Time = 3h 06m 40s
Overall Rank = 634/725
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 22/30
Pre-race routine:

Up early. Didn't sleep very well as the motel was very noisy with partying teenagers (wow I sound old).
Event warmup:

Oatmeal, banana, almonds, coffee and vitamins (including ibreprofin)
Swim
  • 31m 10s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 05s / 100 meters
Comments:

Course was soooo gross. Just a lot of floating crap, hard to get around docks and boats. The water had some very cold spots making it very hard to breath. Some areas were very narrow and hard to sight. Sun in eyes on the way back so I just followed other swimmers. Even did some drafting. First time in a deep water start and was not as hard as I thought other than my goggles got foggy at the start so had to stop to clear them.
Transition 1
  • 02m 37s
Comments:

Was VERY dizzy getting out of the water, getting wetsuit off and putting on bike shoes. To get to the mount line there was a very big hill so waiting to the top to put on shoes.
What would you do differently?:

try to relax more.
Bike
  • 1h 25m 6s
  • 40 kms
  • 28.10 km/hr
Comments:

Very hard going out with the hills and wind. Great coming back. Got a 3 sec warning as I didn't slow down when the person passing me was passed.
What would you do differently?:

Bike harder. More hill practice.
Transition 2
  • 02m 37s
Comments:

It was hard to run down the hill with the bike with bike shoes on so I went slow. Hard to rack the bike as the area was cramped and my bag was in the way. the hooks on the back of my seat didn't work on the rack either so I had to use the nose of the seat.
What would you do differently?:

Rethink the way to rack my bike.
Run
  • 1h 05m 13s
  • 10 kms
  • 06m 31s  min/km
Comments:

I felt great on the run. Just had to go to the bathroom and was very happy to see a port-a-john at a construction site.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster!
Post race
Warm down:

walked, did some stretching and ate.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I don't think the pasta dinner agreed with me the night before and the lack of sleep didn't help.

Event comments:

I wish there were more port-a-johns near the transition areas or on the run course. There was too much debris in the water and pot holes on the bike course.

Great report!  Agreed with everything you said.  I didn't have the luck of seeing the port-a-potty on the run Sealed

There was also the municipal washroom building down the hill from the rowing club, before the pool, which was perfect for me.

They really need to send a crew out with a truckload of orange paint to mark the hazards. I saw some bad spills from the potholes.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
