Overcast
Total Time = 1h 02m 55s
Overall Rank = 3/192
Age Group = M30-39
Age Group Rank = 3/33
Pre-race routine:

drove up to Edgewater.
Event warmup:

Swam about half of the swim course.
Swim
  • 13m 9s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 29s / 100 yards
Comments:

Was in the last wave, so had a lot of weaving and dodging to do. Drafted off a guy for the first few hundred til he started going off course and then I went around him. Otherwise, it was pretty uneventful except for jellyfish stings.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Transition 1
  • 00m 49s
Comments:

Decent T1. Had a crappy rack position given how transition was laid out.
What would you do differently?:

Get there earlier to ensure a better rack spot. They said, "all transition spots are good so no rush to get there." Liars.
Bike
  • 27m 36s
  • 10 miles
  • 21.86 mile/hr
Comments:

Ok ride. The 2 guys that finished ahead of me passed me on the first half of the first loop. Otherwise it was just a matter of staying out of trouble and making clean passes. Going over the speed bumps was interesting, too.
What would you do differently?:

Not do an 80 mile ride the day before.
Transition 2
  • 00m 40s
Comments:

Nothing of interest to report here.
What would you do differently?:

Better rack position!
Run
  • 20m 35s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Pretty good run considering it was about 110% humidity. I thought I was off course once when I thought I made a wrong turn. Stopped to sort of get my bearings and make sure I didn't miss a course marker. Got back on track. The part where you cross the bike course was sketchy. Not a good idea.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, maybe wear trail shoes.
Post race
Warm down:

walked around and chatted with some friends.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lots of training the day before.

Event comments:

2 really bad flaws.

1) They ran out of drinks at the finish by the time about half of the people had finished. That's ridiculously awful.

2) Someone had an allergic reaction at the finish line and they were running around looking for an epi pen. They didn't have and ambulance/EMTs on site. I didn't even know you could hold a race like this without an ambulance squad on site. Seems insane!

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.
