Very strange article indeed.  Not sure what the point is other than to bash the Mayor for, well, something?  Odd.  Maybe the writer of the article can't complete a sprint triathlon and has a great deal of hostility and anger towards those who can?

The author, BTW, is a triathlete who has done Olympic distance tris for some time, including a respectable 2:28:00 in his 40s. I'm pretty sure this links to his results from a couple of years ago: http://athlinks.com/result/159699/218926/79028437/101793691

Thats interesting. I can only speculate the author is jealous somebody slower gets fanfare. I say good for Emanuel, proud of him. Most people are afraid to even try one. To finish in the 1:30s you need to be fit and do some training. I give his achievements all the props in the world and dont see the need to try and downplay it by saying if he competed in a more competitive field he wouldnt do as well overall. That can be said of anybody including elites and pro athletes.

FYI I live in IL and question his morals. Great he is active and getting the sport some press..... BUT I remember back during the presidential election he wouldnt answer phone calls from the Cubs owner about renovating Wrigley field because the Cubs owners brother was campaigning against Obama..... Dont know just thought that was childish.

Not fast for 40-44 AG......probably why he is whining about notoriety that the Mayor gets.

Is that time not respectable?
If not, I've learned a lot in this thread.

Totally respectable. Not fast. That's a competitive age group. Fast for that AG around here is 2:15 or lower, and I live in BFE Iowa :)

The last Oly we went to was won by a 48 year old......2:01:XX.  Sure 2:30 is respectable.....hell, finishing is respectable if that's what we are talking about.  But we're talking about fast, because the author said the Mayor wasn't fast....and he's right.  Likewise, the author's 2:28 Oly is not fast for a 40 something man.....not even close.

It seems that if I swim that slow I begin to sink and I have to either kick or pull harder to compensate while my heart-rate starts going up. I find myself kicking too hard trying to keep afloat.

I went into the pool area (as this was a pool swim) and got body marked. That's when it hit me that I was there to race - this was not a clinic.

Sinus bradycardia is defined as a heart rate less than 55 beats per minute. Bradycardia is commonly seen in well conditioned athletes, but other circumstances can cause a slow heart rate.

I’m terrified of biking hills and the triathlon I am registered for has several hills…on AND off road!! I’m willing to do whatever it takes to finish this triathlon. Any guidance?

We live in a fast-paced society and gym time seems more of a chore than an escape. Rushing through a workout not only yields fewer results but makes athletes prime candidates for injury.

The misconception of LSD is that it’s easy. What I have learned over the years is that LSD or "running slow" is relative to each person.
