Total Time = 2h 30m 3s
Overall Rank = 44/309
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 6/41
Pre-race routine:

ate my oatmeal, dorve to the site, stood around and waited
Event warmup:

none. They wouldn't let us in the water, and bikes had to be in transition, 90 min prior to my start.
Swim
  • 21m 4s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 24s / 100 meters
Comments:

Fantastic swim. I didn';t know what to expect with the current, and having to swim against it for awhle. I told myself just to go nice and smoothly, since I swam twice this week, and hadn't been in the water in 6 weeks otherwise. Sighted well, didn't choke a single time, navigated great, hit the buoys even swimming cross-current. Had to stop twice and clean out goggles, even, otherwise would have been sub 21. I was hoping for a sub 24min swim. I can't believe how well this went
What would you do differently?:

NOTHING
Transition 1
  • 03m 5s
Comments:

No real difficutly. Long run up from the water, Wetsuit stuck a little but nothing too bad. Cost me maybe 8 seconds
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 1h 20m 18s
  • 40 kms
  • 29.88 km/hr
Comments:

I was pretty pleased with the ride. Going out hte first loop I was scared, becasue I didn't know the course at all. The first 4 miles was all uphill and into the wind. Went out in 24 min, but flew back in at 16 min. I knew I could push it a bit more going out for the second loop and recover on the downhill coming in. Kept it nice and steady, and was pretty pleased with the over all performance.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 2
  • 01m 28s
Comments:

Went pretty well. , except I went to put on my running shoe and a damn sneaker ball was shoved down in the toe. I had pulled one out of it prior to the race, but apparaently missed one. Cost me a couple of seconds fishing it out, but nothing too bad.
Run
  • 44m 14s
  • 6.2 kms
  • 07m 13s  min/km
Comments:

Good run, and a good 3 min faster than expected. The hills were tough, especially the bridge crossing right out of transition. I went out slowly, and was surprised with how the first lap felt - pretty good. I didn't really try and pick it up until the last mile. Felt really good, and was really pleased with the run
What would you do differently?:

nothing. Definitely needed to start out easily on the bridge.
Post race
Warm down:

ate a piece of pizza, drove back to Franklin, and met the fam for lunch

What limited your ability to perform faster:

nothing

Event comments:

Fantastic race. I still don't understnad why the sprint distance started before the Olympic distance. Luckily, the weather was great, so it wasn't too hot, like it has been in yrs past. The river current wasn't bad, and the cool weather meant wetsuits were legal. The bike was a bit windy, but not too bad. I enjoyed the run thru downtown, too, even with all of the hills. Lots of volunteers. I'll do this one again.

Good race.

I did the sprint...water temperature felt great. I was worried about the temp since I don't have a wetsuit...figured I could suffer through 400 meters regardless.

If I had to guess on the order of start, they probably figured there would be less congestion in T1 if the Sprint group went first. If the Oly group went first, you'd have some of both groups hitting T1 at the same time.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Is it good to listen to music while lap swimming? Are there any devices to help you keep track of your laps?

This plan is an advanced plan in terms of volume and intensity and appropriate for someone who is looking to go under 5:00 and as fast as 4:30. There isn’t a lot of fluff in the plan.

Executing this full Ironman plan for 17 weeks would give people with one Ironman under their belts very good preparation for a 2nd and 3rd. Preferably, you should have a 6:30 or faster HIM time.
