Member 1004 | Subject: What distance do most start bringing an extra tube? I'm wondering when people start bringing a tube in case of a flat. There's multivoting allowed. It's not in the poll but any comments about when/if you start bringing an extra tire? |

I always carrying a spare tube when racing; smart placement of a flat kit on your bike will have essentially zero impact on your performance but could save you a 10km walk. Never carry a spare clincher; destroying a tire past the point that you can boot it is exceptionally rare. Instead, I carry a $5 bill in my flat kit to boot my tire if need be. Shane |

Subject: RE: What distance do most start bringing an extra tube? If I'm riding my bike, I've got a wedge bag with: a tube 2X CO2 with an inflator a pack of tire boots 1X Quik Stik Tire Changer Doesn't matter what distance, what conditions, etc. I put another tube and a couple more CO2 into special needs bag on my IMs but other than that, it's always the same. (edit)I'm also of the opinion you're way overthinking some of this stuff. Edited by DanielG 2013-07-29 7:17 AM |

145 | Subject: RE: What distance do most start bringing an extra tube? That's one really complicated poll. My answer is "there is always one on my bike" It's a 5 minute job; no matter what distance it's good practice and I'd rather do it myself and ride back than sit and wait for someone to pick me up. |

Expert 1014 , New Hampshire | Subject: RE: What distance do most start bringing an extra tube? I always have a spare tube, CO2 cartridge and inflator, $1 at least for a boot and tire levers, no matter the conditions or the distance. I've flatted 2 miles from home, I've flatted 15 miles from home, I've flatted 1/3 of a mile from the bike dismount line at a race. In the last case, I just walked my bike and continued to race, but for the first two cases, I changed my tube on the side of the road and kept going. |

Member 251 Phoenix AZ | Subject: RE: What distance do most start bringing an extra tube? I carry a can of Vittoria Pit Stop for the Sprint and OLY distance. Pit Stop + a tube for the HIM distance. And anytime I ride, I carry a spare tube. Unless I'm riding predominantly along the light rail route near my house. I figure in that case, if I flat I'll just take the train home |

There is always at least one on my bike. I've never been able to understand the rationale behind not carrying one. |

I realize that it's probably a little thing but my air pump hangs to the side of my frame and so pushes some wind. Sometimes the placements come down to seconds. |

Weight is effectively a non issue in a triathlon so I wouldn't worry about that. For the aerodynamics, get a CO2 inflater and ditch the pump for race day and you're good to go. Shane |

Master 1402 Cumming, Georgia | Subject: RE: What distance do most start bringing an extra tube? I always carry at least 1 extra tube with me. I'm of the mindset that DFL > DNF. I suppose there is that very small chance that if I had a tube and someone else didn't that could mean the different between a podium and a DNF, unlikely but you never know. |

Champion 11989 Philly 'burbs | Subject: RE: What distance do most start bringing an extra tube? Extra, as in besides the one I always carry in my seat bag for all races and training rides? To me that one is standard equipment; a second one would be extra. |

Master 8247 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: What distance do most start bringing an extra tube? Oly and up, plus all training rides. For sprints, I don't bother. I'm clumsy and slow at changing tubes, and would be even worse with race-day adrenaline. If I flatted in a sprint I'd be out of the running for AG or overall competition, and probably cramp up from stopping on a ride of that intensity anyway, so I'd just drop out. Thankfully, I haven't flatted in a race yet, though I have in plenty of training rides. My tire was flat the morning after my HIM--so glad it didn't occur during! |

Champion 10018 , Minnesota | Subject: RE: What distance do most start bringing an extra tube? I am not going to even walk a mile in my bike shoes... I always bring a small kit (tube, inflator, one lever, multitool). I have much more weight I could lose off my body before worrying about that. |

Master 3888 Overland Park, KS | Subject: RE: What distance do most start bringing an extra tube? I always bring a tube, regardless of race length. In a sprint or oly I know my race is "over" if I get a flat but I want to at least complete the course. I've gotten my tire change time down to 7 minutes now (including tire inspection) so I would take it as sort of a challenge if it happened. How cool would it be to podium with a flat tire during the bike leg ... |

If I am being honest, the only thing that determines my placement in a race, and I am being totally honest with myself, is that some dudes are just faster than me. |

And I think that some people have pretty high expectations of what SAG support is meant to offer them. The only way I'd expect a ride back to T2 is if my bike was broken beyond repair or if I was injured to the point where I could no longer ride. |
