Sunny
Total Time = 2h 39m 22s
Overall Rank = 89/302
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 14/38
Pre-race routine:

Woke up early to give myself time for breakfast. Had the usual muffins and a Diet Dew. Got to transition a little later than I was planning on but still had plenty of time to set up and hang out.
Event warmup:

Just some light stretching. They did not allow for a swim warm up.
Swim
  • 29m 39s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

I can't believe that this race was wetsuit legal. I'm not sure that it ever has been. The current was a little stronger that it appeared from the surface. I had a little difficulty rounding a couple bouys due to the current sweeping me. I felt very comfortable in the water and my HR was really low coming out. I'm just need to find a way to get faster.
What would you do differently?:

Get in the pool more
Transition 1
  • 03m 58s
Comments:

Decent little run from the water to T1. Ran with a good pace into transition. Had to sit down to get wetsuit off my feet.
What would you do differently?:

Put some body glide on my feet.
Bike
  • 1h 14m 56s
  • 26.64 miles
  • 21.53 mile/hr
Comments:

There was a strong headwind blowing from the north and it did not go away when climbing the hilliest portion of the course. I still kept it in the big ring but had to work harder that I planned on. When the course turned south, it was fast. I spun out 2-3 times. I was hoping for a faster time but still finished in the top 5 in my AG.
What would you do differently?:

I dont think that I could have done anything differently except for taking in more fluids. Lack of hydration killed me on the run.
Transition 2
  • 139m
Comments:

Nice and quick
Run
  • 49m 13s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

The first loop was terrible. I was just below a 9 minute pace. Never could find a good rhythm and felt dehydrated. I walked through every water station on the first loop. I started to come around on the second loop. My pace pickup up to sub 8 and my last mile was just under 7. I think that hydration and lack of brick training really hurt me. Pleased that I pushed hard on the last 3 miles but it was too little too late.
What would you do differently?:

Brick Training
Post race
Warm down:

Hung out with guys from MTMS.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Overall, I was disappointed with my time. I've put in a lot of work and expected my time to be 2:30 - 2:35. I just need to keep working. I need more time in the pool and I need more bricks.

Event comments:

My biggest complaint is that the Sprint race goes off before the Olympic. This doesn't make sense to me. Team Magic does a great job. This race is more expensive than most, but it's so nice to ride on closed roads and the run through downtown Nashville was great.

The bike was 1.6 miles long. Why be disappointed? You are in IM shape, you will kill the HIM this week.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Is it good to listen to music while lap swimming? Are there any devices to help you keep track of your laps?

This plan is an advanced plan in terms of volume and intensity and appropriate for someone who is looking to go under 5:00 and as fast as 4:30. There isn’t a lot of fluff in the plan.

Executing this full Ironman plan for 17 weeks would give people with one Ironman under their belts very good preparation for a 2nd and 3rd. Preferably, you should have a 6:30 or faster HIM time.
