really depends on your goals and talents.  but- as a rough call I'll say you need 10 hours a week of training to race it pretty well.

5 hrs riding.  3 hrs running.  2 hrs swimming.  or thereabouts.

you could do it in less of course.  I'm a pretty good swimmer- and I can crack a 1:18/100yd pace for a 1500m on 3, 2000m swims a week.  Those swims generally consist of a couple 500's, a few 200's, and a few 100's.  All of those... really hard, except the warmup.

Take a look at the BT plans here: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/trainingplans-list.asp

Find one of the Oly plans that looks like it will work for you.  There are no details for each workout, just volume (time) for each day of training.  Plans with workout details are available for Silver level and above memberships

If swimming is a weakness, it is often recommended to find a swim coach to help you out in the beginning and give you workout guidance.

I haven't looked at the BT plans, but I am using a trinewbies one for my upcoming HIM and they have 10 week/18 week training plans; as well as just swim workouts that you could look at

http://www.trinewbies.com/tno_swim/tno_swimworkouts_Int.asp- this is one of the swim workout links - for distances between 1000-2000yds/m

this is their sample 10 week training plan - http://www.trinewbies.com/tno_trainingprograms/tno_10wOly.asp

I am swimming my first Olympic distance on9/22. First year coming back from Rotator Cuff Surgery. Downloaded the 20 Olympic Plan. I've not been able to do the swim distances due to either sore shoulder or time. I've beeen covering 1500- 2000 yards at least 2-3 X Week. I took alot of clinics and swim lessons. Still uncovering some issues with my pull. My 1/3 mile sprint distances seem to be between 15 and 18 minutes. ( not breaking any records) I've done two sprints this year. Ocean water was extremely choppy. What is a realistic time for me to try to achieve for my first Olympic swim?

triathlon swim courses are notoriously poorly measured. No way to really predict your "time."

I also have my first Oly on the 22nd. In the pool, I have found that my pace for 500m is similar to that of 1500m. I image it will take you 44-50 minutes.

Your absolutely right. I will give it 100%. I figured between 45 and 50 min. Thank you! .

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Keep in mind that the taper period is as important to your body as all of the long hours you’ve put in the pool, on the bike and on the road. It is meant to help you rest, recover and rejuvenate.
