Subject: 30 miles to 35 or 45?

Hey BTer's,

I'm doing my first ride with TNT this weekend in prep for a century on Sept. 10. I'm starting with the group a little late b/c of my tris. But, there are two groups riding: one going 35 and one going 45 (not sure of speeds). I rode a rolling (with a monster hill) 30 miles last week (in ~1:50) and felt good at the end, I probably could/should have ridden another 5 or so. Should I try it with the 45 mile group?  Or is 15 miles too much of an increase? It will likely be a rolling course and be cooler than it's been.

Second question, if I go with the 45 mile group, what type of nutrition should I take? On my 30 mile ride, I took 2 water bottles (one with water, one with gatorade) and some gels. I ended up eating one gel and drinking most of the gatorade and some water. I took fig newtons, but didn't eat them. I thought about an uncrustable-I've heard good things about them

I'll ask the coaches when I get there what they think, but just wondering what the experienced BT cyclists (and TNTers ) think.

Thanks!!!! Have a great weekend.

Any idea what speed they'll be going relative to you're LSD speed? Nothing will limit your distance faster than trying to ride at  a higher tlevel than you're capable of.

You should be OK at 45, if your TNT group is like ours they'll go at a pace to accomodate everyone.

Good luck with yout TNT endeavor. Where's your century?

Gonna say it all depends on the speed and the course. 35 miles of hills are a hell of a lot harder than 45 miles flat ..........

Assuming you felt good at the end of the ride last week and the pace of the 45 mile group this week will be similar then I don't think you'll have a problem going with the longer group.  One thing to consider is what your planned training is in the days following.  Going with the longer group might mean a bit longer recovery and could impact your training in the next few days.  Personally, I wouldn't consider a 5 mile increase to be anything significant and would go 45 being sure to take it easy if you start feeling beat towards the end.

Thanks guys! Appreciate the input! I'm not sure what the speed of the 45 mile group is, I'll be sure to find out, and make sure it's close to what I've been riding.

Thanks, Bear-It's a local one, called the Westerville Dry Run Century.

Joel, I felt like you do-that 5 wasn't a big increase. 15's a little more, but I don't push myself enough anyway. My plan is kind of up in the air right now, because I've changed some races around...so recovery the next week won't be a huge issue.

Thanks again!

Pace is important (nothing new there...)

You can probably count on close to 3 hours for a 45 mile training ride. How did the saddle feel after almost 2 hours? This may be more significant than muscle fatigue.

I'd definitely bring some nutrition (brownies maybe ) and ask the ride leaders about availability of water. 2 bottles probably isn't enough for a 3 hour ride. (You might start with 2 gatorades, and refill with water when convenient.)

Ha! Thanks McFuzz...I do have some brownies available I will ask about water. That's a great suggestion. The saddle was okay after 2...I didn't really notice it, maybe a little shifting around toward the end.
