Pre-race routine:

Usual, except I was up at 330 since Victoria was already up getting ready to run River to Sea. I ate my usual toast with butter/almond butter but packed a 1/2 sandwich since I was up so early. I ate that plus an extra cup of tea once we got to Brigantine at 558am and were basically the first people to arrive.
Event warmup:

ran 1mile about 45mins to race start. Dripping with sweat as the humidity must have been 100%. I asked a volunteer if there was a swim warmup and was told no but when I got to the dock, people were in the water warming up! Suit on, gel down and into the water I went.
Swim
  • 05m 16s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 12s / 100 yards
Comments:

The starting area was about 30feet wide running the length of the dock area. The current was running out so it was pulling to the left. I'm not sure what happened but the majority of my wave thought it was a good idea to start the swim at the far left instead of the far right corner. I just strugged my shoulders and aimed myself 5 feet to the right of the first bouy and by the time I arrived I was dead on it and the rest of my wave was 30 feet to the left now fighting the current. After that I just settled into a pace and before I was even fully settled it was over.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. By far one of my best swims in execution.
Transition 1
  • 01m 28s
Comments:

Transition is two fing blocks long at this race. Running two blocks in barefeet on a crappy shore road isn't exactly fun but o' well buttercup.
Bike
  • 25m 49s
  • 11 miles
  • 25.97 mile/hr
Comments:

Coming out of the water first allowed me to have a police motorcycle guide and really pacer for me on the course. If I had been in 2nd place I might have gotten lost on the bike course. It was well marshalled but like any shore town it's full of intersections and with the motorcycle all I had to do was focus on racing.
The wheelset was awesome! Wish I could have measured my power but I could feel my legs burning for the majority of the course so I know I pushing it well. The last 5minutes were really winding so it dropped off a bit.
Transition 2
  • 01m 19s
Comments:

two blocks in barefeet running with a bike while dodging people walking to their bikes from the swim. One guy thought I was just being over aggressive to get out biking and couldn't understand that I was already done the bike and being aggressive to get out running.
Run
  • 24m 32s
  • 4 miles
  • 06m 06s  min/mile
Comments:

The crown on the road really put pressure on my knee. I thought about hopping onto the sidewalk but it was full of people. Had a tailwind the first two miles and a straight headwind coming back. I have a habit of listening to people cheer after I've passed them to see if someone if close behind and couldn't hear any the first two miles. I went through miles 1 and 2 at 5:50 and 5:57pace. Once I turned around I realized I was really alone. Finally saw second place about 2minutes after turning around so I was a solid 4minutes ahead which doesn't help motivate when running into a straight headwind. The last mile wasn't pretty but it usually isn't.
Post race
Warm down:

two awesome pulled porks sandbos! Best real food catering at a race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

my inconsistent training.

Event comments:

Tons of volunteers, police, beach patrol on the swim and the food was great. Swim course was a bit short but it's a beginners race so for them it was perfect.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.
