Hartford Marathon Foundation

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 35m 58s
Overall Rank = 360/423
Age Group = F30-34
Age Group Rank = 13/21
Pre-race routine:

Got up early, ate a light breakfast, stretched and drove to the course. Got there around 6, set up in the transition area, and then headed over to the swim start for the pre-race meeting.
Swim
  • 13m 32s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 32s / 100 yards
Comments:

Really good swim for me. I got panicky in the first 200 meters because of the crowds, I couldn't really swim. However, once everyone separated a bit, I was able to start passing and getting through the crowds. I started in the fourth wave of swimmers. By the time I rounded the last buoy, I was solidly in the back of the pack of the wave in front of me. I'm very happy with how the swim turned out.
What would you do differently?:

As scary as this sounds, start in the front of the line of swimmers, not the back. I thought the back was safer, but I was too fast to feel comfortable back there and I think it cost me some time.
Transition 1
  • 02m 33s
Comments:

Not a bad transition.
Bike
  • 50m 43s
  • 11.3 miles
  • 13.34 mile/hr
Comments:

I know that the bike is my worst sport, its not news to me. I have been improving on the bike steadily, but I need to build more strength. There is still a lot of room for improvement on the bike. I got passed 25 times!! All those people I beat on the swim, passed me on the bike. This is where I can make the largest gains before my next race. However, I managed to get up all the hills without stopping, I did pass two people, and I kept my cadence up. My average mph on the flat stuff was around 15 and I got to 33 on some of the downhills. Even with such a bad time, I still proud of how well I did considering my skill level.
What would you do differently?:

Keep training on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

In this race you had to dismount before approaching a large downhill. I ended up getting off the bike and then taking my shoes off to run down the hill. That turned out to be difficult with bike in one hand and shoes in another. I need to learn to take my feet out of the shoes while on the bike.
Run
  • 27m 42s
  • 3.4 miles
  • 08m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

Great run. Way faster than my anticipated pace based on my training runs. I always forget I'm faster in races. I can never really push myself to run that fast during training. The thing I was most proud of during the run was that my legs still felt good when I started the run. There was no heavy legs post bike. My training is starting to pay off.
What would you do differently?:

Northing.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around the beach, stretched and ate some post face food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough skill on the bike. I'm not a newbie to running and swimming, but I'm still really new to biking.

Event comments:

Very well organized race, lots of friendly volunteers, and a scenic course. Well worth it.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.
