Naperville, Illinois
United States
World Triathlon Corporation
65F / 18C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 07m 9s
Overall Rank = 111/1550
Age Group = M 40-44
Age Group Rank = 14/133
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:30 and had a little bit of coffee, drank 20 oz of water and a bagel with peanut butter. Sipped on powerade during the hour drive to the race. Had a banana about 1 hour before race. I think this combination of food is perfect for a spring
Event warmup:

Swam the entire 400m swim course. I have learned that a swim warm up is imperative for me to have a good race swim. Practiced my 180 degree turns by rolling/ backstroke technique. This tecnique worked well.
Swim
  • 07m 41s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 45s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was a good swim for me. I was relaxed; kept good form throughout; sighted pretty well. Could have gone faster. The rolling backstroke turns worked well.
What would you do differently?:

Push a little harder.
Transition 1
  • 02m 19s
Comments:

There was a very long run from swim out to my bike; atleast 1/4 mile. I ran pretty hard during this time and cut through transition. 3rd fastest in my age group, so overall I did very well. I wasted time trying to get nutriition in my tri suit.
What would you do differently?:

Just carry my nutriion or put the nutrition in my tri suit prior to swim.
Bike
  • 32m 36s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 22.87 mile/hr
Comments:

This was a very good bike for me. Fastest bike split for me ever ~21.4 MPH. Not much I would do different. The course was likely shorter than the 12.4 miles as advertised.
Transition 2
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

A very good T2. Struggled with getting shoes on. Likely need new shoes :)

4th in my age group in T2!
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Run
  • 23m 10s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

Good run for me!
What would you do differently?:

Could have pushed slightly harder, but not much.
Post race
Warm down:

Water, stretch, banana, bagel, and relax.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not much. Overall, with my current conditioning, this was almost the perfect race for me.

Great job Todd! Sounds like you had the perfect race. I learned those backstroke turns and never really seen anyone doing them, they do sound like they will help you get thru the turns faster.

At mile ten I heard a noise like I had gotten paper in my spokes or something. I looked but saw nothing but a few seconds later my rear tire blows out.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.

Since I didn't have much time and since it's a super sprint, am I OK just go to at the training relatively hard through Thursday or even Friday?
