Subject: Best way to start off a dock
My next triathlon starts off of a dock. I've been practising and have tried a number of different ways to dive of a dock but my goggles come off or come loose every time. Has anyone had any experience with dock starts? What's the best way?

IM Louisville starts off a dock ... most people just jump in feet first (around the 35-second mark you can see fairly well what I mean). A few cannonballs Laughing

Feet first and put your hand on your goggles until you pop up.

It depends.  Do as above if it is a TT start.  If it's a mass start try to get on an end, or an anchor point,  unless the dock is fully anchored......because the center is going to move backwards ALOT.

Doesn't almost every race in every swim meet start with a head first dive?

Goggle strap tight, angled up so it goes up and over not straight back, cap over the goggle strap, good suction with the goggles to your eye sockets, lock your biceps to your temples and do a shallow dive.

It's not at all....but if you aren't ready for it you just kind of fall off the dock....then you've got feet in your face from the get go from the people who were ready and dove.

It's a staggered start, one every five seconds.

NO 70.3 had a dock start. I just jumped in feet first. My goggles did come off so I guess I wasn't holding them enough.

The water was too cold for me to dive. It actually took about 15 sec to actually catch my breath.

ive never had an issue with that. try looking along your arms and shallow diving. then the force from the water will push your goggles on instead of down your face. or treate it as you would transition, and see if you can figure out a way to pull your goggles up the fastest out of everyone there!

I would jump feet first. Had to jump off a ferry for one of my races ( Escape The Cape in NJ ) and that is what I did goggles stayed on.

If you develop a strategy for the off-season, you can go into the next season stronger than you ended the past season.
