First tri coming up shortly, Come from a cycling background so I plan having one of my jerseys on for the bike but when it comes to the run im thinking about just going shirtless because the cycling jerseys can rub a nipple the wrong way, even with body glide in my case. Do they have people that run shirtless or will i be in the minority?

Down here in the south it is common for guys to do the whole race shirtless. In fact, if you're talking about a sprint I would question wearing the bike jersey at all. Are you going to swim in it? Because it's not very easy to put on a relatively tight jersey when you get out of the water, wet and out of breath.

Alternatively find a tri top you can swim, bike and run in.

Paging Dr. Hasselhoff...

Unless there is a rule against it, go for it. Don't forget the sun block.

Agree with the bear that unless you're going to swim in it to skip it for the bike too.

However, check the rules as not all races permit athletes to race without a top.

all the races around here require you to have your chest covered when you cross the finish line.

You can buy nipguards (little disposable nipple protectors) at most running stores or just use bandaids to prevent soreness.

Does anyone know if there is any USAT rule that says you have to wear a shirt for the run? I'd rather ask for forgiveness than permission if it's not stated explicitly on a race website or mentioned at the race briefing/meeting.

Both major series here that I have run in require shirts for the run, and I do believe it is a rule, but I am not 100 % sure on that, it definitely is for any series near me running shirtless is an automatic DQ and that's stated in the sign up declarations along with any music devices.

What everyone else said, check race website or email RD. Most of the smaller races I do there are people running shirtless.

Also as mentioned before but worth repeating, unless you are wearing it under a wetsuit it's going to be pretty difficult to get on in T1. Try putting it on after a shower and see how it goes.

Good luck with your first race!

USAT rules prohibit public nudity, but don't mention shirts specifically.  WTC does require shirts.

None of our local USAT races mandate shirts, but it's always good to check with the RD to make sure.

Recommend trip top for all. If you wear cycling jersey on the bike in a tri, you will be more in the minority-especially in shorter races.

Also body glide and or vaseline are friends of the nips. Even when I run shirtless on training runs, I may still lube there just because!

Use a tri top or a compression shirt for the whole race. No nipple issues.

Might as well also spice it up a bit with a speedo.

You think you're joking, but there are a couple of fast guys in my area that race in speedos.

All races here require guys to wear shirts.

If you change to a regular running shirt you can use nipple-guards or small round band-aids to prevent chafing. Or so my male runner friends tell me.

Gotta be something good about racing in 90F+. Shirt's just in the way.

I actually prefer to run with shirt on when it's 90+. At that point, me staying out of the sun makes me faster than any temporary breeze initially felt going shirtless. Even though you're allowed to go shirtless, I'd thought I'd chime in: I would either wear a tri stop or my first tris I wore a well fitting running shirt on the bike. There was no need to wear a bike jersey for a sprint. Normally I don't eat anything for sprints but I do tape a gu to my bike in case I plan to have something.
