Subject: Zone Training - Too Hard?
I have a question about zones based of HR. Are these efforts too hard?

For reference, I took a LT test several weeks ago and it was determined to be at 166. I did a field test with similar results. Using LT or Max HR, my running zones are as follows:

HR/Pace label Range data label Time
1 - Recovery 110 - 141
2 - Extensive Endurance 142 - 151
3 - Intensive Endurance 152 - 158
4 - Sub-Threshold 159 - 165
5a - SuperThreshold 166 - 169
5b - Anaerobic Endurance 170 - 175
5c - Power 176 - 184

Be Iron Fit Run Zone:
Z1 118-135
Z2 137-155
Z3 157-162
Z4 164-174

My running Z2 HR range, based off several methodologies, is around 140-155 (Fink, Friel, MaxHR, etc.). The thing is, to get to low Z2, I am in the 6:50-7:15 min/mi range. I can and have been running in these ranges, but just wonder if it'd be better to run easy some days, hard others, and not worry about zones...

Could I get some feedback from any of you savvy HR training folks?

Thanks!

How does your Z2 HR pace compare to Z2 (easy) run pace using VDOT (McMillan or Runbayou?)

7:00 Easy Pace with McMillan is a 16:00 5k. That's pretty spritely.

So I know the real feeling of jealousy...not to make light of your question, but I want your problems and issues when it comes to running!   More seriously, you may want to check in with the guys at Davidson College in NC - Bill Pierce, Scott Murr and Ray Moss.  They wrote Run Less, Run Faster.   They coach and do all kinds of research around running.   They may be a great source of more local coaching and analysis.   Also, Appalachia U. has extensive training and metric testing for cheap.   Worth checking out.

Training our bodies to work efficiently in Zone 2 will help us keep our HR and pace even throughout an Ironman. This theory would hold true for the bike and run portion of an Ironman race.
