Swimming is so boring for me. Good music would help, I suspect.

Is there a good system that would allow me to listen to pandora or an iPod/MP3 player while swimming?

Just listen to "dancing with myself" before swimming and you won't need an mp3 player in the pool

Yeah but that sneer will slow me down.

I see they do make waterproof MP3 players as well as waterproof bags/cases for smartphones (I have an iPhone 4), which is generally preferred?

Happy to sell someone my old swimp3. I switched to a waterproofed iPod Shuffle from http://www.audioflood.comwhich is pricey bu works flawlessly. I've also had an h2o audio case and it was ok for 3 months until it broke.

The problem with using music for swimming is getting addicted to it. If my SwimMP3 ever breaks down, I'll be really bummed.. And prolly be shelling out another hundred something bucks for another.

i've had the waterproof ipod shuffle since march and love it (I think it was from audioflood but would need to check.

there was a little trial and error for me getting the ear buds set correctly and so that they wouldn't get pulled out while swimming, but once i figured that out they been great (my tip for that, which someone at my pool showed me, is to tuck the ear bud wires under your goggle straps -- that guy, btw, said he's had his for over 2 years and it works great and he loves it). I don't flip turn though, and I don't know if the stock ear buds would stand up to that.

the buds keep water out of your ears too -- i got used to the feeling and now usually swim with ear plugs if I don't have my headphones on.

Big fan of swimming with MP3 and really helps the time pass by.  I had a drycase bag & never again.  Worked for 1/2 the season and then the seal started to leak and my iphone3 was damaged.  Luckily I wasnt using my 5.

I did get a lifeproof case, but after my last experience, I dont trust it 100%.  My friends have used it for taking pics and lounging in the pool.  I just wonder about the constant movement of it through the water and how it always has a way to get in everywhere.

I picked up a cheap $25 mp3 player on ebay and been really happy with it so far.  (I wrote a quick review on the gear page, I think its on page 2 right now.)  But I figured at that low a price, I dont care if it only lasts a year or two as I already feel I have gotten my moneys worth and I still have my iphone intact.

I really enjoy my swimp3 player.  You can usually find it for under $100 on Amazon.

I use www.h20audio.com  I have the arm band with the waist belt extension for my Iphone and the waterproof ear buds.  It works great and definitely breaks up the boringness.

On my second H2O Audio. The first one lasted 4-6 months and then the wires to earbuds started breaking down and by 9 months didn't work. Second one has been better, maybe a year now and one earbud isn't working. When it works it's great but for the price I feel it should last longer so I am going to check out the audioflood. Tired of replacing the H20 Audio and BTW their customer service is HORRIBLE.

If your trying to log extra laps the music makes it a lot more tolerable. I got tired of talking to myself lap after lap after lap......

h2o audio is now X-1. I swim with their Interval 4G. It's pretty awesome. I've got a discount code if you want to order anything from them.

I don't think I would be able to listen to music and follow my workout at the same time. I have a hard enough time counting as it is. For those using music, are you doing long sets for time or are you actually able to follow a workout with mixed sets, distances, and paces?

I must say that I had a pretty bad experience with a H20/X-1 iPod case.

Here's a product review I left on Amazon:

I really wanted to like this product. I get so bored staring at that black line on the bottom of the pool, and this seemed like my solution. In the beginning it was great. Audiobooks, music, all kinds of things to keep my mind off the monotony of countless laps.

Then the first problem came. My iPod starting skipping randomly and uncontrollably. A little online research seemed to suggest that this was a known problem, so I contacted the manufacturer. They sent a replacement (of course I had to pay to ship the original back).

Within 2 weeks the replacement had the exact same problem. Sent it back (paid shipping again) and got a new one.

After that, I had about 3 months worth of solid performance from the case. But then last week I opened the case to remove my iPod after a swim, and it had taken a swim of its own. I'm still not sure where the case was compromised, but I can tell you that I'm very careful with the seal because I've read it's easily damaged. All I know if that my iPod was drenched.

My iPod survived, but I'm done with this product. 3 strikes and you're out.

I use it a 100% of the time unless battery is dead. FWIW you probably don't need it if you are planning more short sets working on speed. Still works but on those days I don't seem to notice as much. Long days it's great. Med day still great. If you have trouble keeping track of what you are working on it could be a hindrance I guess. It's just background noise for me so if I lose count on a set I probably would've anyway. I tend to stick with if I am unsure of where I am in set and can't tell by the clock it's a penalty. I.E = unsure of if I am at 350 or 400 it's 350.

It might be a bit much for some, but this combo is where the 910 shines (cuz it certainly doesn't shine in auto-multisport!).  Being able to look at the watch to see exactly where I am in a set is great, as I can't keep track on my own (yes, I know - all you good swimmers/fish are able to, but I just can't, even without the music).

So, a notecard with the workout, an audioflood iPod and the Garmin 910 and... all of a sudden I LOVE swimming now!

And for OWS with either LSD or longer intervals based on landmarks (I do that a lot at Walden), it's fantastic.

I've tried other people's but never ones that were comfortable in my ears.  But these look like the solution:

Thanks to all for the suggestions.

The neptune and waterproof iPod units look nice, but I am a cheapskate.

Will probably give one of the $25 eBay units a try.

Friend I know uses a Lifeproof box on his iPhone 4S in an armband and a set of waterproof earbuds. He says half the time he doesn't even use the earbuds, and puts the phone in the top fo his jammers, says he can hear it just fine with his head underwater as long as there aren't tons of people splashing in the water in the other lanes.

i have the UnderwaterAudio ipod Shuffle that I got on amazon, i think it was like 130 bucks.....soooo worth it for me....love it. I've had it for 2 years with zero problems. The customer service has great reviews, though I've never had to deal with them, luckily.

I bought the cheapest underwater headphones to go with them. Bought them for 12 or 18 bucks. Lasted over 1 year, i just recently replaced them. Satisfied with the purchase.

About the same here. I like audiobooks, and the swimp3 wasn't clear enough for that. But it was great for music. I've had 3 h20 cases fail. Not the waterproofness, but the ear phones.

Went to the audioflood and love it.

I went thru about 4 of those stupid cases. I bought one and the had to replace it. Then I bought another and they had to replace it too.

Good to read that you are pleased with the audioflood. You got me to thinking I need one......
