Subject: Has Anyone Raced An ITU Event?
As many of you know, ITU is coming to Chicago and I really want to register for the AG event as it's in my backyard. I watched a video about the pros that race ITU and noticed a few things: 1) No one were wearing wetsuits 2) Every one were riding road bikes and 3) Drafting IS allowed.

If you've raced an ITU event, are these 3 observations typical for the AG races as well or is it mostly just pros? Thanks!

ITU events are draft legal for the elites at the sprint and Olympic distance and non draft for age groupers. Because age groupers don't draft, they are also able to use tribikes in accordance with the ITU rule book (basically the same as the USAT rule book but there are some differences. For the wetsuits, elites have different cutoff temperatures than age groupers (20C for elites and 23C for age groupers for Olympic distance IIRC) which is also addressed in the ITU rules.

The ITU rules are at http://triathlon.org

Exactly what he said!

I'm looking forward to the race here in our backyard! Planning on some big training sessions focused on that race for a while.

that stinks... I thought about registering for it too, just so I could have a bike race like they do on tv! lol. I'm pretty sure draft legal would account for a blazing fast bike split.

Bike split at the Olympics last year was about 59 min. You would think it would be much faster in draft legal but where they kill it is the swim and run. 17 and 29 min!

If you survive it.

It's not just draft legal.....it usually becomes  large packs that resemble Crit races (ITU courses are very technical multi-loop courses compared to what most  triathletes are used to).....most triathletes don't have anywhere near the bike handling skills to keep up. (or upright) Laughing

On another note....if you can't swim a minimum of 1:20/100M you're never going to know anyway....because you'll be out of the race before it starts.

ITU draft legal = swim and run.  You're either in the first pack or your not.  If you're not, you're not racing.

But yeah....get in there....it's crazy fast.

Very important to bear in mind when it comes to considering the bike speeds from London. Not to mention about 15 90 degree turns per lap (7 laps).

If you want to do a bike race like that, then I would suggest signing up for a crit and seeing what bike racing is all about. While it is certainly possible to have a fast bike split in a draft legal race, this requires that you end up in a bike pack and for most age groupers, it is very unlikely that a draft legal race would unfold the way they would expect. Even with experienced athletes in this format, there is likely one big pack and then a bunch of athletes riding in packs of two or three and just hammering to not get lapped. When you get a pack of 20 or more over a multiple loop course, the small groups are quickly lapped out and don't even get to start the run.

I love draft legal racing but I don't see how it can be safely offered to the masses, especially with the current organization of triathlon.

Is it this competitive in the regular AG event? If so, even though its open to anyone, do the slower people just know to stay away? I'd like to race in my hometown but I'd rather not be blown out of the water!

Generally these races tend to have a higher percentage of fast athletes than a typical race but there is still a mix of abilities and I doubt you would feel out of place.

Well I'm slow and I don't have the sense to stay out of it. I am eager to check it out. Can't wait.

You will after the first one.  Laughing

Have a blast!

Maybe Shane will know this......do they pull you from the course if you get lapped?  In the draft legal races my kids do you get pulled from the course any time you get lapped.  They usually run 4 lap courses (sprint distance) and some of the slowest swimmers never even get on the bike course.

Make no mistake.....it's the best and most exciting triathlon there is IMO.

Know that base training is not a component of training that is going to necessarily make you faster, but it will make you stronger and give you more endurance to last through the longer races.
