So I mentioned to someone that I do triathlons, and he asked a bunch of questions about races... including, "so, how do you audition for those things?"

Heh.

Back when I was mostly running marathons and ultras, folks at work would always say things like "Is that one of those 5K marathons?" (with very puzzled look)...

Come on, don't most of us have some sort of idea about the difference between 5K and 26.3 miles? well....maybe not....

I've been asked if there are try-outs for triathlons.. sort of like an audition, I guess

DrLeah - 2006-07-22 6:17 PM

that's way too funny

like the person, who after being told I was training for a half ironman, asked me "what's the other half?"

hahahahahahah... so funny

So many "non-running" ppl think that any race is a marathon. Some girl was training for a local 10k and was telling ppl that it would be "her first marathon."

Oh well... I guess I didn't know at one point, either.

My father-in-law keeps on asking how my marathon training is going...
"Well, Dad... it's going fairly slowly..."
(Considering my longest single run to date was today at 1.5 miles...)

Then of course, when I told them that I was planning on doing an Ironman someday,
after they asked what the distances were, my mom-in-law goes:
"Well screw that!"

*sighs* Thank God my husband thinks I'm cool. And that I have fellow BTers who understand.

I will sheepishly admit that prior to starting this and getting into endurance training I thought a 5K and a10K were much longer than they are.  I was totally intimidated by running distances and my ignorance was bliss.  Hell, I did not realize my first OWS was a half mile until after the race was over another BTer(stupidnickname) told me.  If I knew it was a half mile swim I would have never signed up for it.  Sounds WAYYYYYY to long to try and swim.  I am not dumb, just distance challenged.  I went to college and everything.  lol

So the next time that someone asked a silly question please be nice and remember that some of us are just scared, but maybe a little curious as well(about tris and distances before some of the perves take this and run with it) and you might end up getting another innocent person addicted to the sport.

I just started doing tris this year and I'm only doing sprints, yet everyone in my family thinks that I'm doing all IM distance. "Whoa, aren't you going to be exhausted after a triathlon? Don' they go all day long?"

"Nope, I'll be fine."

In their case, ignorance is my bliss.

(psst, Brandt, that's just 'cause they KNEW you were going to rock the other 2 legs.)

"What's the other half?" has got to take the cake! HA!

For the record, I was nice to the guy. He was intrigued when he learned anyone could do it, even asked me for "a website or something", no lie... It does still amaze me that we can show up and drag our various selves around the same courses as the speediest pros, on the same day no less! What a sport.

Oh yeah, I am always nice and even encouraging - "Look at me, with this body, if I can do it you can too!!!" One of my big passions that I put a LOT of energy into is encouraging people (mostly women) to believe in themselves and try out fitness of some sort by signing up for a race.

My latest encouraging story is a girlfriend who 'doesn't run', has asthma and allergies like crazy, and we signed up to walk a 5K which she did. Then we signed up to walk a 15K - which she did! Next on her list is the Disney Half Marathon!!!!!!!!!!!!! (and now she knows just how far that is) That girl can walk FAST!

well I was going to do my first race. Chicago marathon and my dad was like hey Buffalo Grove is having a marathon and I should run that as aprt of my training. it was a 10k.

Ironicly I never ran a 5k or 10k in my life and I do not plan running any. 6 half marathons 5 marathons and 1 ultra later.

Funny after I did my ultra they asked what is next I thought about a triathlon and they were like you better not you will die because they are so much harder than an ultra marathon.

Being a runner I am always curious about how far in pure running does a triathlon equal too. of course the fact that all spirits are different lengths really makes that hard.

Nope not everyone knows the difference. Also realized when I was marathon training that people don't realize that a "marathon" is a distance no matter what city it is held in. I was training for the Maui Marathon and a family member back east said, "is the Maui Marathon as long as the NYC Marathon?"

Last month when I did my first tri, was one the phone with my dad and explained to him how far I had to go for each sport. The next morning, race day, he and my mom call and leave me a voicemail..."just wanted to wish you luck on your marathon!" Oh well at least they are supportive

How long is an ultra marathon? 52.4? 100?

Hmmm.....I've never had anyone ask me about it. I guess it's because my supervisor and our DBA both are triathletes, as well as a few others in the company, so everyone I see pretty much knows the score.

Mostly, I just get the "You're f'ing nuts, you know that, right?" Especially at lunch time when I / we are going running, and they are sitting down to lunch.

Ultra marathon is generally categorized as 'anything further than a marathon' with standard distances of 50K, 50 miles, 100K and 100 miles, though other distances exist.

And most in the community consider Pikes Peak to be an ultra, despite it being 13.1/26.2, simply because of the extra difficulty in climbing 7800+ feet (and descending) to an altitude of 14,110.

This is funny.  Everyone at church asks me.. "how's your marathon training is going or how was the marathon, how far is that marathon anyway?  So what do you do in a marathon?"

I correct them and try to explain that I am doing a sprint triatholon, then I get questions like.  "Does that mean you have to go really fast?..."  Well at least they take an interest

Even though I'll be doing my third tri this year, my mom still calls it a marathon. Occasionally, she'll get it right and call it a tri-ath-uh-lon.

When I finished my last sprint, (it was a hot day, and I dumped LOTS of water over my sweaty self), my mom looked at me and said, "You're all wet... How come?" I found that amusing, since I had just been swimming in a lake, and I sweatted up a storm during the bike and run...and then there's the water over the head thing...

I've also heard people call it the "bike, run, swim" event. "So can you pick the order you want to do the events?" "How much of a break do you get in between?" "Are all three events on the same day?"

Yup...it's just amusing to me...

My sister emailed me asking when my marathon was. I replied telling her it wasn't a marathon but I wished it was and that someday it would be.

A couple emails back and forth...nothing serious...she says goodbye and ends with...Well, good luck on your marathon!

Everybody that I talk to just assumes that a triathlon is an ironman. And then when I tell them the distances of my triathlon, they say something to the effect of "oh, that's it?".

I have heard some people call anywhere from a 50k to 70 miles an ultra marathon and 71+ being ultra runs. Mine was only a baby ultra also known as a 50k. does not sound much harder than a marathon but when you reach 26.2 miles and are exhausted well the 5 miles really kill you since at my pace at that point I still have about an 1 1/2 hours left.

I would not count a marathon that was uphill or up mountain all the way as an ultra. its like saying a 5k all up hill is a 10k. marathon is a defined distance of 26 miles 385 yards that comes to 26.2 miles.

Now I can understand people getting distances in triathlons since only IM and HIM seem to have set distances and everything else is just a range for distances. I know coming from the runner world I thought all spirits were the same distance but I would not be more wrong.

Try following this conversation....

I was chatting with my dad and telling him about my race... He asked me how I did and I said I came last in my age group, and I was the second last woman in total...

He laughed at me and asked why I bother if I don't win.

Then he commented he could not understand why I didn't do better because I am the fastest swimmer he knows! (I was in a swim relay ONCE when I was 12 and I was the anchor... our team won). I pointed out that there are still 50 more kilometers to travel after the 1500m swim.

Then he said it was OK that I didn't win because I have asthma and I should be careful when I run... but good on me for travelling 51.5kms under my own power. He has trouble getting out of bed some mornings.

Don't get me wrong, my dad is supportive, but like father like daughter, we are both straight shooters... we don't sugar coat our feelings, just say what we think. (We are also both Sagitarrians).

Anyway, he also told me my brother (who was in town for the race) asked him to buy me a Tri Bike!! Way to go BIG BROTHER! You rock.

Sorry for the rant... but the conversation seemed to follow this thread.
