Donkai Half Azz'd - Triathlon1/2 Ironman

Pre-race routine:

I got to EL very late after my sons basketball games. I slep t for about 5 hours and woke up to race with my friend MJK

I had Pickle juice, pop tart and Caffe Latte to supply the body for the event

The two of us headed out around the point to the estimate 1.2 mile marker. I started steady and kept a good groove with strong pulls. I felt pretty good half way and then just turned around and pushed a bit more ocming back. Overall felt strong and did well.

These transitions are more like IMWI - take your time and just get there. We wlaed back and made sure we were ready to go. No urgency, just quality

WE know this course forward and back. it is hilly and challenging. WE pushed it heading out. Maybe too much. But rode strong on the first lap. As the second lap started, the wind was picking up and made the overall ride a bit harder. But we got after it and kept pushing. MJK was not running today due to his leg, but would try a little.. So he pushed a bit more on the bike, knowing the run was shorter for him.

This definitely affected me later

Ugggghhh!!!

That was tough it got hot fast. I started solid but faded and almost puked at mile 12. Then just walked it out and made it to mile 13

Half Azz'd does not describe the effort. It was a good day and accomplished a $0 1/2 IM day

Is it realistic to race a sprint and Olympic distance race within 2-3 weeks of one another to gauge my progress before tackling the half Ironman?

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

This half Ironman plan covers many weeks of challenging, but attainable training for someone who has some endurance experience, and ideally some Olympic distance races within the past season.
